SCB Steelers Hot Reads – Patience Required But I Don’t Like It

Hey Steelers Fans. Welcome to Wednesday.

The Kickoff

I suppose some patience is required. After all, we are talking about the most patient franchise in professional sports, but at some point that patience has to run out… Doesn’t it? The Pittsburgh Steelers saw their season come to an end almost two weeks ago. We’ve heard from Mike Tomlin who talked about the importance of change following a five-game losing streak to end the season. We have seen nothing from the franchise however. Art Rooney II has yet to speak (it was 1/30 last year when he finally did) and we’ve seen zero moves with the coaching staff. One thing to keep in mind here is that there are some assistants whose contracts have expired. The Steelers do not make any announcements related to those guys who go elsewhere. To our knowledge though, the big names like Arthur Smith, Teryl Austin and Pat Meyer are still under contract. And we all know that Art Rooney II would rather have a root canal scheduled before a colonoscopy rather than pay a coach to leave. Therefore I guess we have to remain patient even though I really don’t like it. I’m guessing you don’t either.

The O-Line

First of all, congratulations to Center Zach Frazier who was named to the Pro Football Writers Association’s All-Rookie team. It’s a well deserved honor. I expanded upon that and a lot more in my look back at the offensive line from this past season. There was a lot to cover from good and bad perspectives.

The Tree

Many Steelers’ fans often refer to the fact that Mike Tomlin’s coaching tree has very few branches as a reason why he may not be as good of a coach as so many suggest. The reverse of that is in Detroit. Dan Campbell has already lost his offensive coordinator to Chicago and his defensive coordinator is likely headed to New York or New Orleans. Does that mean Campbell is a better coach than Tomlin? Maybe it does or maybe it means that because the Lions have been so hot the last couple of seasons teams are anxious to get those coaches. Honestly I just want to win playoff games and talk of coaching trees does little for that goal.

Why???

I don’t understand why fans are clamoring for so many free agent wide receivers when the likelihood of them coming to Pittsburgh is so remote. WHY would a guy like Tee Higgins come to a team in quarterback purgatory? WHY would a guy like Keenan Allen, who is 33 years old, come to a team that isn’t a Super Bowl contender? Money, in the end, always talks, but I fear we are headed for more Van Jefferson’s.

The Changing Game

The days of getting to fourth down and immediately sending the punt unit out are over. The days of playing conservatively and letting the defense ‘handle things’ seem to be over as well. Look no further than this…

Random Reads

I didn’t watch a second of the College Football National Championship game. Besides the fact that those two teams are my least favorite, I just didn’t care. I’m too focused on the NFL and the Steelers and that’s probably a bad thing… For the record, I’ve seen both teams at least three or four times this year… Nightmare scenario: Bills vs Eagles in the Super Bowl and Josh Allen and Jalen Hurts are both injured. That’s right Steelers’ fans, it would be Mitchell Trubisky vs Kenny Pickett… In reference to the fourth down issue I mentioned earlier, I’d be just fine if they banned the ‘tush push.’ It’s a rugby play, not a football play and it’s also one more thing that helps the offense and hinders the defense… I chose the feature image today with Najee Harris and then realized I might not have too many more times to use it.
