SCB Steelers Hot Reads – Oh Captains My Captains

Hey Steelers Fans! Welcome to Tuesday. It’s finally game week!!

The Steelers selected their team captains over the long holiday weekend. T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward represent the defense. Miles Killabrew is the Special Teams captain and Russell Wilson, in his first season as a Steeler, was named the sole offensive player to be captain. The first three are obvious and need little to no discussion. The captaincy of Wilson really doesn’t need much explanation either when you think about it. While Wilson is a newcomer, the question must be asked. Who else on the offense would you have selected? You have rookies at center and right tackle (and maybe left guard). You have incredible youth in the receiving corps as well. I suppose an argument could have been made for James Daniels but that’s about it. I wouldn’t read much more into the selection of Wilson than that. Yes, he’s a veteran with a terrific resume, but he’s also come in and proven himself through hard work and dedication. Hopefully it all translates to the field.

Speaking of Heyward… And Pat Freiermuth

Most of you know the Steelers have had a long-standing position that once the regular season begins, they no longer work on contracts for current players. To this point under Omar Khan this has largely held true. With just days remaining until the season kicks off for the Steelers on Sunday, will they be able to reach deals with Cam and Muth? My gut feeling right now is that they will stand pat (get it?) with both guys but especially Heyward. If Khan and Company were convinced he could return to his previous level of play from two seasons ago then I think this would have already been done. Freiermuth seems more of a 50/50 proposition at this time.

This Week’s Podcast

This is always a huge night for us at the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc. It’s our annual season preview where we discuss our predictions for the Steelers and the NFL. We also do “Over/Unders” on many different Steelers’ players and potential statistics. Stop by and check it out! Thursday night at 10pmET.

Looking Strong

Both Troy Fautanu and Jaylen Warren, each battling injuries, are practicing and looked pretty good. Take that with a grain of salt of course as practice is Mike Tomlin’s “guide” but it doesn’t always mean a guy gets a helmet. In the case of both guys… I’m hoping they play on Sunday in Atlanta. Roman Wilson is another guy who could play Sunday but we shall see.

Fantasy Football

Thanks to everyone who joined our SCB Steelers Podcast Fantasy Football League! Some of you are making moves already like you’re Jerry Jones!!

Random Reads

Congrats to T.J. Watt and his wife Dani. They announced they are expecting their first child. His brothers Derek and J.J. Are already fathers with two and one kids respectively… What a crazy weekend of college football. Florida State is 0-2. Brian Kelly has a temper. I think Deion is headed for a very similar season as he had in 2023. His kids and Travis Hunter can only do so much… There are many things I’m hoping to see on Sunday but I guess if I had to choose one thing it would be the O-Line being awesome. If we can run the ball early it will set up the pass so much better and take some pressure off of Wilson… SteelSon got the start in goal on Sunday in his school’s season opener and delivered a 1-0 win!
