SCB Steelers Hot Reads – Becoming as Clear as Mud

Hey Steelers Fans! Welcome to Wednesday.

If I were to base my entire decision on what I saw on Saturday night against Buffalo, my thought on who to start at quarterback week one in Atlanta would have changed. I have been insistent since day one that Russell Wilson will be the starter. He will remain the starter until he is either injured or so inept that Mike Tomlin has no other choice but to go with Justin Fields. Now however, I’m less sure about that feeling. If the offensive line continues to struggle as it did then I think you have to go with the more mobile guy in Fields. Again, I can’t base everything off of one game, but with such limited preseason opportunities, my feeling on who starts week one has become less clear.

Interview With Nick Farabaugh

If you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, I sat down for about 20 minutes with PennLive.com Steelers writer Nick Farabaugh on Monday. We talked Broderick Jones, the QBs and much more as the Steelers continue through the preseason.

Forget About It

I’ve seen several people suggest that with Nate Herbig injured and unavailable for the foreseeable future, the Steelers should look into bringing back Mason Cole. He can play both center and guard and could act as a fill in. We can definitively say that this is not going to happen. Recent photos of Cole show him down – maybe 50lbs – since the end of last season. He looks more like a kicker than an NFL lineman now.

Regressing to the Mean

The Steelers were 9-2 in games decided by less than a touchdown last year. Some of that was due to several top QBs not being available when they played those teams. Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson in the finale for example. It’s rare when a team can sustain that kind of track record one year to the next and with a laundry list of the NFL’s best QBs and toughest teams on the schedule, it doesn’t bode well for the Black and Gold.

O-Line Updates

As was largely expected, the Steelers put Nate Herbig on season ending IR yesterday cleaning the way for rookie Zach Frazier to get the start week one. Troy Fautanu told reporters yesterday that he is preparing to be in the starting lineup week one as well despite his MCL sprain. With him as an exception, I would think we will see a lot of the first team OL on Saturday in Detroit. They need the work.

Random Rumblings

Pretty interesting comments from Tua Tagovailoa regarding Brian Flores. And in return some thoughtful comments from Flores himself. Ryan Clark chimed in… The two spots I see the Steelers adding to from the outside are wide receiver and slot corner. They will add to other places too like O-Line but in terms of guys who would see significant playing time I think it’s those two spots… I really like what Broderick Jones said yesterday. He’s not making any excuses about his elbow or the bulky brace he’s wearing either. He could have easily gone in the other direction and didn’t… I really hope Jaylen Warren can get past the hamstring issue. His loss, for any length of time would be extremely damaging when you look at his importance on this offense… It was 49 degrees this morning and it’s supposed to be back in the 90’s by Monday… Have a great day everyone!
