Mike Tomlin Should Have Considered the Bears’ Offer

According to a report this morning from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chicago Bears contacted the Pittsburgh Steelers about potentially trading for Head Coach Mike Tomlin. Schefter also reported at least one other team had also made similar overtures.

Not surprisingly, the Steelers said, “no thanks” to these offers. Mike Tomlin himself told the other 31 teams in the NFL to “save their time” and not bother pursuing him. Ultimately, Tomlin does hold the keys to this vehicle. He has a no-trade clause that he would have to waive in order for this to even be considered. Therefore, it’s more his decision than it is the Steelers.

So even if Art Rooney II had been all for this privately, it wouldn’t have mattered. Personally, if I’m Mike Tomlin, I’m listening especially in the case of the Bears.

Tomlin would be the toast of Chicago right now. He’d come in as a guy with a proven record of getting his team to the postseason and as a guy who knows how to build culture. Just as importantly, the Bears are a young team with a solid defense and most importantly, they have a quarterback with the potential to be great.

Compare that with what he has in Pittsburgh. The fan base has had it. He has no quarterback, the offense regressed as the season wore on and his defense – the highest paid one in the NFL – needs massive changes in order to return to being great.

I admire and greatly respect Tomlin’s willingness to get things corrected and get the Steelers back to the Super Bowl but I also would have understood had he pursued this. He’s going to Hall of Fame regardless of what occurs in his career the rest of the way, but staying in Pittsburgh will likely be a struggle.

There are no guarantees there wouldn’t be struggles in the Windy City, but there’s a lot more in place there with which to be successful in a shorter amount of time. I’m not saying he should have taken this offer, but I sure would have been willing to listen.
