Dupree Adds Much-Needed Versatility for the Steelers

by Steeldad

With cornerbacks Kevin Johnson and Marcus Peters already off the board, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected outside linebacker Alvin “Bud” Dupree with the 22nd pick in the first round of tonight’s 2015 NFL Draft.

I like the selection simply because there is so much depth at the other position the Steelers desperately need to upgrade, cornerback, and now they can focus on that entering day two of the draft.

At 6′ 4″ and 269lbs, Dupree fits the “elephant” role that Defensive Coordinator Keith Butler is looking for. What that means is DuPree can be a stand-up outside backer or put his hand in the dirt depending upon what Butler chooses to do.

That type of versatility is much-needed by the Steelers who will need Dupree to step in sooner rather than later. With 37-year old James Harrison as the only stable outside backer, the defense needs playmakers.

Jarvis Jones has been a disappointment to this point, injury last year aside and while Arthur Moats is a good player, he really fits as more of a reserve.

Dupree’s size has not limited his ability. He recorded a 42″ vertical jump and a 4.56 forty yard dash at the combine. That’s not exactly an easy feat for someone that size.

While Dupree immediately brings size and explosiveness to the defense, he must also bring consistency. That’s something he’s lacked at times during his career at the University of Kentucky.

The reason I do like pick is because this is a guy with great upside who relies a lot on athleticism. With mentors like Harrison and outside linebackers’ coach Joey Porter, the sky could be the limit for the newest member of the Steel Curtain.

Love that he was still on the board and love his versatility to put his hand in the dirt or cover.
