The NFL Combine is now in full swing and while it appears easy to start narrowing things down for the Steelers… Don’t. There’s so much time left between now and the draft and so much to be done especially in free agency.
Offensive line is a place where the Steelers are likely to look with Kelvin Beachum and Ramon Foster both free agents. NFL Network’s Bucky Brooks thought two offensive tackles both had good days on Friday in the Combine. Michigan State’s Jack Conklin and Indiana’s Jason Spriggs both showed first round potential although I did have some conversation with a draft guy who thinks Conklin could kick down to guard.
Rumors that Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith had nerve damage following his severe knee injury in the Fiesta Bowl appear to be substantiated. Most think this will likely lead to a “redshirt” NFL season for Smith. SCB contributor Ben and I had a good discussion about Smith a few weeks ago. He’s a big-time talent who would have easily been a top ten pick. Now? not so sure.
While running backs Ezekiel Elliott and Derrick Henry both had very good days, it was Kenyon Drake that moved his way up draft boards Friday. He thrived in both the 40-yard dash (4.45) and the broad jump (10′ 3″) and could be a guy to keep an eye on.
Tweet of the Day… Mayock on Bell.
MAYOCK: “Le’Veon Bell to me is the prototype in the NFL right now for the all-around back"…@nflnetwork Could not agree more.

Keep an eye on Stanford guard Joshua Garnett. He seems to fit exactly what the Steelers like and the fact that he is from Stanford bodes well right?
Today we see the quarterbacks, receivers and tight ends. Pay special attention to Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper along with just about every other tight end as the Steelers are in dire need there.
Special thank you to the offensive linemen yesterday who chose to wear basketball-style shorts rather than the spandex that so many wear.
Have a great weekend Steeler Nation!
