SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Guardians’ Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

I missed discussing this last week largely due to the Draft but the NFL has said they’ll allow players to wear the ‘Guardian’ caps in games starting as soon as this season. If you aren’t familiar, here’s a picture of what they look like.

If you are old enough to remember The Flintstones then you’ll get this reference… They look like the Great Gazoo’s helmet. OK, enough of the jokes. The NFL has two years of data now after mandating that several position groups wear the caps in practice. The data shows a significant decrease in concussions and other head trauma. For players choosing to wear them in games, the caps will be designed to look just like the team’s helmet with logos, stripes etc. My question would be why not just mandate them across the board if they are this beneficial? I’m curious to see how many guys actually wear them in games.

The Latest Podcast

Episode 368 of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc is available for your listening and/or viewing enjoyment. We re-capped the Draft, discussed Najee Harris and a whole lot more.

Speaking of Najee…

I shared some thoughts on how the Steelers came to the decision not to give Harris his fifth-year option. It is what it is now…

The Saga of the Number Two Receiver

If you’re an up and coming musician or singer in Pittsburgh I think I have a song for you. Simply title it the “Ballad of the Number Two Receiver” and sing about all of the potential players the Steelers could trade for. Boom! Instant number one on the charts!! In all seriousness, that’s kind of where I feel like I am right now. We know the Steelers have to find a legitimate receiver to play opposite George Pickens but nothing seems even remotely close to happening. Whether it be Brandon Aiyuk or Courtland Sutton, nothing seems to have much traction these days.

Dan Moore

I do not understand the fascination this team “supposedly” has with Dan Moore, Jr. In two straight years the Steelers have drafted offensive tackles in the first round yet I keep hearing how Dan Moore will still be starting for this team. Where? Are they going with three tackles in a fascinating new offensive scheme? Unless Troy Fautanu or Broderick Jones are hurt, they are the starters. Period. End of Report.

Schedule Release

The National Football League will be releasing it’s 2024 schedule some time this month but I feel very confident in telling you that the Steelers will open on the road. Last year, they opened at Acrisure Stadium for the first time in almost a decade and were promptly smacked by the Niners. On opening weekend of 2024, the Pittsburgh Pirates are scheduled to be home and that has always indicated that the Steelers will open on the road. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to see it be a divisional opponent either. I’ll have my ‘Schedule Prediction’ article out soon.
