SCB Steelers’ Draft Journal: TE Evan Engram

Evan Engram

Evan Engram, TE, Ole Miss #17

6’3″, 236lbs

Senior

What’s to like: Soft hands and is not a body catcher. Has a good catch radius. Crisp route runner with attention to detail. Athletic guy who is fast for a tight end. Fast for how long he is. Versatile, can line up in-line or as a wide receiver. Will command a defensive back to guard him, very few linebackers will be able to keep up. Quick off the snap, good burst and creates separation quickly. High character kid.

Concerns: Inconsistent hands, needs to focus on the ball when thrown. Needs to square up when blocking, too often does he use only his shoulder. Would like to see more nastiness and aggression when engaging to block. Lunges to block at times instead of keeping his feet. Contested catches are an issue. Looks a bit lost in space, doesn’t always know where to sit down or move to.

Verdict: Athletic move tight end with high upside. A vertical threat who works well up the seams. I see a guy who is very athletic and needs coached up in the blocking department. He’s not bad, but his technique and lack of true engagement can be worrisome. A move-the-chains tight end who can get you some YAC as well. Reminds me of lesser Jordan Reed.
