WPIAL 2021 Week 5 Results – Streaks are Broken!

Week 5 was a night of streaks falling, not just across the WPIAL but statewide:

Wyomissing’s win preserves Clairton’s record as the longest winning streak in state history. Thank you Wyo!

Class 6A Results

Mt. Lebanon 51, North Allegheny 20 – The Blue Devils bombarded North Allegheny to remain the only undefeated team in 6A. Mt. Lebanon and Central Catholic will meet next week with first place on the line. Joey Daniels threw 2 TD passes to Eli Heidenreich, one to Alex Tecza and ran one in on his own. Alex Tecza had 4 total scores (3 rushing, 1 receiving).

Central Catholic 35, Seneca Valley 0 – Another dominant performance from Central’s defense sets up a showdown with Mt. Lebanon for the top spot in the conference (and likely for the conference title).

Baldwin 21, Norwin 10 – The only winless team in 6A got off the schnide by beating Norwin.

Canon-McMillan 45, Hempfield 27 – The Big Macs win big to keep pace in the 6A playoff race.

Class 5A Results

Allegheny Six Conference

Moon 28, South Fayette 13 – Moon is the only remaining undefeated team in 5A. Ty McGowan threw for a touchdown and ran for another to lead the Tigers to victory.

Upper St Clair 31, Peters Twp 3 – Ethan Heister scored 3 times as Upper St Clair routed their neighbors to the south.

Bethel Park 26, West Allegheny 10

Big East Conference

Penn-Trafford 27, Woodland Hills 6 – Woody High has now dropped 5 in a row after winning their Week 0 game.

Gateway 53, Latrobe 7

Franklin Regional 36, Connellsville 0 – Connellsville has yet to win this season and the schedule only gets tougher from here on out. The Panthers pick up their first win since Week 0.

Northeastern Conference

North Hills 14, Kiski 10 – Kiski was one of two remaining undefeated teams in 5A, but their run was ended at the outset of conference play. John Green Jr scored with under a minute to go to put North Hills ahead. Green had a passing touchdown and the game-winning run for the Indians.

Pine-Richland 21, Penn Hills 14 – The Rams win their third game in a row in a battle of the teams that finished at the top of the league last year.

Fox Chapel 28, Shaler 14

Class 4A Results

Big Eight Conference

Belle Vernon 56, Laurel Highlands 14 – Belle Vernon lost RB Quinton Martin to a knee injury last week and sophomore Jake Gedekoh stepped in and ran for 243 yards and 5 TDs this week. Devin Whitlock had two moments of brilliance in the first half to break the game open – a punt return TD and a 61-yard scamper with under a minute to play to set up a TD that put the Leopards up 21-7 at halftime.

McKeesport 41, Ringgold 0 – The Tigers were dominant once again. With Ambridge and Waynesburg winning, Ringgold now has the longest conference losing streak in the WPIAL.

Trinity 20, West Mifflin 19 – A thrilling victory for the Hillers as Alex Tush kicked a field goal as time expired to give Trinity the victory.

Greater Allegheny Conference

Hampton 45, Greensburg Salem 6 – The Talbots once again put together a dominant performance and are now alone atop the Greater Allegheny Conference. If they can hold on the rest of the way, Hampton would win their first conference title since 2014.

Armstrong 37, Mars 0 – Mars’ offensive struggles continued against Armstrong.

Plum 23, Highlands 21 – In a back and forth game, Plum took the lead on a 38-yard field goal with 5 minutes left and were able to hang on.

Knoch 27, Indiana 26 – The #GACrazy is living up to the moniker this year. The win snapped a 12-game conference losing streak for Knoch.

Parkway Conference

Aliquippa 35, Beaver 7 – The Quips beat up on their Beaver County rivals. Freshman RB Tiqwai Hayes ran for two TDs and Quintin Goode threw 2 TD passes to Cyair Clair, including an 85-yarder on a rare 1st and 35 that was created by penalties.

New Castle 14, Montour 10 – Chris Hood ran for a touchdown then threw a touchdown pass in the closing seconds tolift New Castle past Montour

Chartiers Valley 28, Blackhawk 13 – A week after committing to Penn State, Lamont Payne scored three receiving touchdowns (on just four catches) for the Colts. This one could’ve been a lot worse as Char Valley had 3 TDs called back on penalties.

Class 3A Results

Allegheny Seven Conference

North Catholic 56, Burrell 0 

Freeport 33, Valley 6

Deer Lakes 9, East Allegheny 7 – After a winless 2020, Deer Lakes has now put themselves in position to make the playoffs with their third straight win.

Interstate Conference

Elizabeth Forward 48, South Park 0 – The defending Interstate Conference Champions made an early statement that they are still the team to beat in the section.

Mt. Pleasant 27, Yough 12 – Mt. Pleasant’s victory puts the Vikings in position to challenge Elizabeth Forward for the top spot in the conference.

South Allegheny 63, Brownsville 6 – Brownsville entered the week as the only team in the WPIAL that had not scored, and finally put points on the board this week.

Northwest Six Conference

Central Valley 69, Quaker Valley 7 – A nice victory for the two-time defending WPIAL Champions.

Ambridge 35, Hopewell 9 – The Bridgers end the WPIAL’s longest losing streak (28 games, since Week 2 of 2018) and longest conference losing streak (34 games, since Week 9 of 2015)! Congratulations to Ambridge!

Avonworth 35, Keystone Oaks 0 – The Lopes get revenge for a 7-point loss last season that kept them out of the playoffs.

Non-Conference

Southmoreland 41, Derry 0 – The Scotties won a non-conference game against one of their traditional Westmoreland County foes.

Class 2A Results

Allegheny Conference

Steel Valley 40, Ligonier Valley 0 – In a battle of unbeaten teams, Steel Valley dominated. Nijhay Burt had his second 5 TD performance in three weeks, running for 277 yards to lead the Ironmen.

Serra Catholic 39, Shady Side Academy 7

Apollo-Ridge 41, Summit Academy 22

Century Conference

Waynesburg 27, Frazier 7 – Waynesburg snaps a 24-game conference losing streak, which was the second-longest in the WPIAL.

Chartiers-Houston 27, Charleroi 10

Washington won by forfeit over Beth-Center.

Midwestern Conference

Beaver Falls 39, New Brighton 18 – Beaver Falls hangs on to the Jug for another year with their rivalry game victory.

Neshannock 58, Ellwood City 14 – With Ambridge’s win, Ellwood City now has the longest losing streak in the WPIAL (21 games).

Mohawk 37, Riverside 0 – Mohawk wins their third conference game of the season and now looks like they will be a factor in the playoff race. The Warriors put on an aerial assault to top the Panthers.

Three Rivers Conference

Sto-Rox 63, South Side Beaver 6 – The Vikings cruised to victory in their first conference game of the season.

Western Beaver 19, Seton LaSalle 13

Carlynton 6, Brentwood 0

Non-Conference

Linsly (WV) 26, McGuffey 21

Class 1A Results

Big Seven Conference

Cornell 34, Union 22 – The Raiders came back from a 22-13 deficit to take a 27-22 lead in the fourth quarter and pull away for a 34-22 victory. Cornell hangs on to at least a share of first place in the Big Seven.

Fort Cherry 29, Northgate 28 – Fort Cherry overcame a halftime deficit to come from behind and beat Northgate. The Flames have been battling hard this season after ending their long losing streak.

Shenango 28, Burgettstown 6 – The Wildcats get their first victory of the season as Burgettstown gets back on the field after having to forfeit last week.

Eastern Conference

Clairton 28, Bishop Canevin 18 – In a battle atop the Eastern Conference, Clairton flexed their muscles and showed they’re still the team to beat.

GCC 35, Springdale 0 – The Centurions dominated the Dynamos to keep pace in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Leechburg 53, Jeannette 7 – The struggles continue for Jeannette as Leechburg’s surge continues. The Blue Devils are looking to make the playoffs for the first time in 33 years.

Riverview 42, Imani 12 – Riverview snaps a 15-game losing streak (the 4th longest in the WPIAL) and an 11-game conference losing streak (the 8th longest in the WPIAL). Interestingly their last conference win was also over Imani Christian, back in Week 5 of 2019.

Tri-County South Conference

West Greene 41, Carmichaels 20 – With wins over California and Carmichaels, West Greene has a clear path ahead to the Conference Title.

Mapletown 15, Monessen 8

Bentworth 49, Jefferson Morgan 48 – A good ol’ Tri-County South Shootout. Bentworth stormed back from a 36-20 halftime deficit to tie the game at 42 with 5 minutes left. JM scored with just over 3 minutes left but Bentworth marched it down and scored the tying touchdown with 33 seconds left and converted the extra point to win the game.

California got a forfeit victory over Avella.
