We knew it was coming and it has. Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has formally announced that 2021 was his final season as a professional football player. A video message, tweeted from his personal account and then from the Steelers makes known what was inevitable.

I would expect that at some point over the next couple of weeks or months that there will be a more ceremonial retirement announcement. This would likely take place at the Steelers’ Facility with assembled family, friends, teammates, media and team personnel. The possibility also exists that this could be it too. This announcement may be all that is coming and that’s OK by me.

While man of us assumed this season was his last Number Seven didn’t say much about it until the week leading into his final home game, a Monday Night affair against rival Cleveland. His ultimate send-off was one of the best the city of Pittsburgh has seen and will no doubt rank right up there with the all-time great goodbye’s.

Big Ben leaves the game as one of the all-time great quarterbacks. He is in the top ten in several categories including passing yards, touchdowns and wins. As for the Steelers, he has completely re-written the entire record book when it comes to the quarterback position. He also takes with him three trips to the Super Bowl including two wins.

No word on what his next move is in life. He’s talked openly about just being a father and husband but there’s no doubt other opportunities may await. Best wishes Ben and thank you. The Hall of Fame awaits.
