If I had to choose a current Pittsburgh Steelers’ player least likely to troll fans on social media, I probably would have blurted out “T.J. Watt” before the question was finished being asked. As it turns out, I would have been wrong. At least for now anyway.
Watt posted the following to his instagram earlier today.
This is nothing more than a guy flashing a peace sign right? Sure looks that way but considering his current contractual situation, his age and the era we are in, it looks an awfully lot like a guy saying “peace out.” This is of course another way of saying “goodbye.”
There’s only a handful of people who know why Watt posted this so we are left to wonder his intent. Let’s keep in mind that Watt is now 30 years old and will turn 31 in October. This is typically a stage in a pass rusher’s career where the sack numbers start to fall off. He’s also entering the final year of his contract and has seen other top pass rushers make some serious money this offseason. He will not want to be left behind.
If you’re the Steelers however, there is no better time to trade him. He still has value and rather than make him the highest paid Steeler ever, they could move on and accumulate some draft picks in the process. The flip-side of course is that the Steelers don’t want to go down the road of Franco Harris and Rod Woodson either. They want T.J. Watt to be a ‘one helmet’ guy and know they have to offer him something substantial.
So what is Watt’s post all about? It could be absolutely nothing but then again, every social media post has intent behind it. What was Watt’s intention? My guess is that we will find out soon.
