Steelers Set to Make Arthur Smith Their Next Offensive Coordinator

According to Tom Pelissero, the Pittsburgh Steelers are set to hire former Atlanta Falcons’ Head Coach Arthur Smith as their next offensive coordinator. Smith served as the Falcons’ head man for three seasons going 7-10 in each of those three seasons. Prior to that Smith was the play-caller in Tennessee where he helped guide an offense around Derrick Henry and QB Ryan Tannehill.

Smith’s offenses finished 10th and fourth overall in 2019 and 2020 respectively and leaned heavily on the run where the rushing offenses ranked third and second. His pass offense however ranked 21st and 23rd.

Under Smith, Henry won the rushing title in back to back seasons including one in which he went over 2,000 yards. His offenses routinely ranked at the top in terms of play-action passes as well.

Along with Smith, the Steelers interviewed just three other candidates all of whom had limited to zero play-calling experience. That tells me that Smith was the target all along.

We’ll have much more on this on the SCB Steelers Podcast and right here at steelcityblitz.com.
