Steelers New O-Line Coach Isn’t Exactly Inspiring Confidence in Fans

The Pittsburgh Steelers have hired former Carolina Panthers Offensive Line Coach Pat Meyer as their new O-Line Coach. Since Adrian Klemm departed with two weeks to go in the regular season and then Chris Morgan left to take the OL Coach position with the Bears, the Steelers have been in desperate need of someone. Meyer has a lot on his plate as he heads to the Steel City.

His first order of business is to make sure people don’t confuse him with Mike Munchak. No longer in Denver, Munchak’s return to Pittsburgh seemed like a perfect fit. The one thing fans often don’t consider is whether or not Munchak wanted to return in the first place. It’s entirely possible he did not.

The second thing Meyer will have to do is establish himself and endear himself to the fan base. How does an Offensive Line Coach do that? You start running the ball with greater effectiveness and you protect the quarterback. Accomplish those things and you immediately become a fan favorite. No one will be asking “who” you are at that point.

And then there’s this. Meyer is coming from a Panthers’ team that has won 10 games over the last two seasons. Your ability to coach isn’t always rooted in the outcome. Sometimes the talent you’ve been given just isn’t adequate. Think Bill Belichick in Cleveland for example. That said, there’s no escaping the fact that when you look at Meyer’s resume, there isn’t a whole lot of  ‘winning’ involved. He’s had stints in Carolina, Buffalo, Chicago and with the LA Chargers. Personally? I like winners but I’m not blaming his lack of a Super Bowl title all on him. It takes a lot more than that.

The fact of the matter here is that Meyer has to build a relatively young and somewhat discombobulated offensive line into a much more consistent machine. One that is nasty, aggressive and most importantly, one that blocks well. If he can’t do that then his time here will be short.
