With the draft behind us, the Pittsburgh Steelers can now focus on developing their 2016 team. Phase one of the NFL’s offseason program began back on April 18th and this week, the rookies come together for their first introduction to the Steelers in terms of getting on the field. Here are the key dates for the remainder of the spring and summer leading up to Training Camp in Latrobe.
May 6th-8th: Mandatory Rookie Camp. Starting on the 9th, rookies whose institutions have held commencement ceremonies may stay and train in Pittsburgh. This will be the Steelers’ first chance to get a look at their players who were recently drafted or signed through free agency.
May 9th- May 20th: Phase Two of the offseason program is held. On-field workouts and individual player work is permitted during this time.
May 23rd – June 16th: Phase Three of the offseason program is held. This may include more team-oriented work such as 7 on 7 and 11 on 11 drills. Mandatory mini-camp wraps up Phase Three and is held June 14th through the 16th.
Training Camp dates have not yet been set but what I can tell you for certain is that the Steelers will not have to start as early as they did last season. You’ll recall they played in the Hall of Fame Game which required them to start camp in July as opposed to August.
