Steelers’ First Depth Chart Reveals Few Surprises

by Steeldad

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released their first depth chart now over a week into Training Camp and with it are only a couple of moves that raise questions.

First on my list is that Martavis Bryant is listed behind both Antonio Brown and Markus Wheaton. This isn’t a total surprise, but I think most of us expect Bryant to become the number two guy.

On the offensive line, the Steelers list Mike Adams behind Kelvin Beachum and Alejandro Villanueva behind Marcus Gilbert. Despite still being out after July 20th back surgery, Adams finds himself as the swing tackle. The question I have here is whether Villanueva is ready should Adams not be?

Jarvis Jones is currently penciled in as the starter at right outside linebacker ahead of James Harrison who has yet to practice. Can he hold on to that spot? If he stays healthy I think he sees the majority of the snaps.

Opposite him is Arthur Moats which is no shocker but first round pick Bud Dupree is listed right behind him. Anthony Chickillo, who has had a fantastic camp is listed as the third team LOLB. He’s going to have battle past several guys in order to make the roster.

The most intriguing spot to me is cornerback where there aren’t really any surprises with the slight exception of Kevin Fogg being ahead of rookie Doran Grant. Newly acquired Brandon Boykin is the third corner with Antwon Blake the fourth. Will the Steelers keep six corners on the roster? It’s a distinct possibility.

One more thing to check on is back-up quarterback. Bruce Gradkowski is still listed as the number two but he has yet to throw a pass in camp. How long will the Steelers go without addressing the situation a little more urgently?
