Steel City Blitz Quick Hitters for August 17th, 2014

by Steeldad

The Steelers finally got that preseason win they’ve been looking for as they beat the Buffalo Bills 19-16 on a Shaun Suisham field goal at the gun.

-Rookie Howard Jones set up the game-winner with his third fumble return in two games. He also played a vital role on special teams as well. I believe he has earned a roster spot.

-Think Ryan Shazier was ready for his Steelers’ debut last night? He had 11 tackles and one interception in basically a quarter of play.

-It’s crystal clear to me that the Steelers offensive unit, not just Ben Roethlisberger, enjoys running the no-huddle offense. They just have more life. Anyone else see this too?

-I remember when Antonio Brown came into the NFL as a sixth-round pick from Central Michigan. Many experts said his lack of high end speed was a problem. I think his speed is just fine and he’s another example of why a 40-time isn’t the same as game speed.

-The offensive line still has work to do. I’m seeing too much penetration and the backs aren’t even getting a chance to get going before they are hit.

-Ben Roethlisberger’s numbers on the night were 8 of 11 for 128 yards and two touchdowns. That’s a rating of 150.8. Not too shabby.

-Good crowd for a preseason game. Over 50,000 on hand at the Big Ketchup Bottle last night.

-The old saying is that “you can’t make the club from the tub.” Rookies Jordan Zumwalt and Shaq Richardson had better heed that warning. Neither played last night and unless one or both make significant plays in the final two games it looks like the practice squad for them.

-Also not playing last night were Jarvis Jones, Will Allen, Will Johnson, Matt Spaeth and Devin Smith.

-Martavis Bryant continues to be a work in progress. He had two catches, drew another penalty on the cornerback guarding him (third time in two games) and also dropped a pass. His freaky athleticism is too much to ignore however.

-Terence Garvin is going to make the decision about linebackers even tougher. He had seven tackles, four solos and a sack.

-Extremely short week for the Steelers coming up as they play in Philadelphia on Thursday night. The good news? The game will be nationally televised on the NFL Network.
