Steel City Blitz Mock Draft 2.0 – Post-Combine Edition

by Steelbydesign

With the combine finished, we have a little more information. Here’s the second edition of our mock. You can check out version 1.0 here.

1. Jalen Collins, CB, LSU
I had Trae Waynes here before the combine. After putting on a show, I’d say there’s little chance he falls to the Steelers’ spot. Collins is a guy I’m not completely sold on, but think the Steelers may take a chance on. As far as measurables go, he has everything you want and reminds me a little bit of a young Ike Taylor. He’s big, fast, and has some long arms. I think he fits the zone-heavy scheme the Steelers used to employ under Lebeau, and could also play some man if Butler wants more of it. He’s very raw though, this is definitely not a plug and play type of pick. Collins scares me a little, because there is bust potential. I figured I wouldn’t keep Waynes here, and I have a feeling I won’t keep Collins here either.

2. Owa Odighizuwa, OLB/DE, UCLA
Right now this is one of my favorite guys in the draft… and before it’s all said and done I might have him at the Steelers’ #22 pick. The only red flag is he’s had two hip surgeries. Medical concerns didn’t scare the Steelers away from Jarvis Jones though. I think Owa would have a real chance of starting from day 1, and be LaMarr Woodley 2.0; which I add as a compliment. Steeler nation may have forgotten what a stud Woodley was early in his career.

3. TJ Yeldon, RB, Alabama
I’m hearing the Steelers are high on Yeldon. He had a pretty mediocre combine, but I think he could be a solid backup to Bell in our system. He’s a solid all around back that should thrive in a one-cut scheme like the Steelers’. The fact that the Steelers are showing interest in 2nd and 3rd round running backs tells me they’re serious about not wearing out Bell.

4. Jesse James, TE, Penn State
With Heath Miller slowing down, and his contract year coming up, now is the time to find a decent backup. The Steelers showed interested in Florida State’s Nick O’Leary, who’s a solid blocker with soft hands, but as we saw during the combine woefully un-athletic. James is built like Matt Spaeth, and like him is a good blocker, but has some upside in the passing game. He disappeared in games at Penn State, and probably should’ve returned to school, but he showed at the combine he can move. He’d be a project that could be a dangerous receiver.

5. Lynden Trail, OLB, Norfolk State
Trail started his college career at Florida, but transferred to Norfolk State when Urban Meyer left. I’ll be honest, Trail’s technique is a complete mess, but he’s a great athlete. At the senior bowl he even played TE in goal line drills and looked comfortable there. With OLB sorely needed, I’d double up, and see if coach Joey Porter can get something out of the kid.

6. Jamil Douglas, OT/G, Arizona State
The Steelers typically like to have a swiss army knife offensive lineman on the roster at backup. When Kelvin Beachum graduated to full-time starter they grabbed Wes Johnson who was cut during the season and quickly claimed by the Jets. Douglas may not play all positions but I think he could backup two positions potentially.

7. Travis Raciti, DE, San Jose State
The team’s pipeline of projects at DE was depleted last season when Josh Mauro and Nick Williams were stolen. It’s likely they lose Brett Keisel and Cam Thomas this off-season, so it wouldn’t be a bad move to grab a DE late to work on the practice squad for a couple years.

I don’t mind Collins i’s just that fans want a rookie CB to start and honestly in the 1st round I see Waynes as the guy who starts in the league. The LB from UCLA is a flat out no no prospect. By that I mean no damn way you take the guy with a Chronic Hip injury. Give me McKinney, Flowers, Golden or Mauldin as guys for that OLB spot. I still don’t want a TE just because of the fact that Blanchflower has not been given a fair chance. I honestly think that you guys don’t appreciate Miller take a look at this past season 66 catches and more than 50% of those catches he caught, he made first downs. Everybody is so enamored with the idea of copying the Pats and the Saints and for the life of me I don’t get it or understand why you would the Steelers to copy them instead of just being happy with the TE’s they have right now. Unlike the rest of you I’m not going to complain about guys like Spaeth and Palmer not getting catches cause you know what I have no reason to at all. The Steelers have AB, Bryant, Wheaton and Bell to go with Miller to catch the ball and you want an unnecessary player to catch the ball and create mismatches when that’s why this team has 3 good WR’s and a RB who create plenty of mismatches to begin with and you want to add another guy who would get the same treatment the guys like Spaeth and Palmer get already. Now I get it you got your opinion and I have mine and that’s what this whole topic is about giving and adding opinions.

You can argue with me till you’re blue in the face about tight ends… The Steelers are meeting with them, they’re going to draft one… period.

They won’t take a TE in this draft and here is why: There is better talent on the board that will make a bigger difference than any TE in the draft and here is few names I would take over any TE after the 1st round: Ifo-Ekpre Olomu, Cedric Ogbuehi, Lorenzo Mauldin, Marcus Golden, Jeremy Langford. So why would the Steelers take a unnecessary TE when Blanchflower has not been given a fair shot and when better talent appears on the board?

I think i’ll have to adjust my mock as well. I knew Jalen Collins was going up the board there a bunch of talent there. The only reason for the lack of starts is LSU a number of quality db’s. I like the Trail pick i think he’s a play-maker, who will make a better pro than college player. We do need a TE unfortunately there just aren’t many in this draft.

You know I hate when people of this website basically saying that Blanchflower is worthless and should not be given a shot on the team and must be cut, it just isn’t right. You people basically ripped me before the season on Wheaton cause I kept knocking him and you guys sat there and defended him now I’m one who is defending Blanchflower and you guys are ripping him talk about being hypocrites. I get mad when guys like Chris Garman flat lie in saying that the Steelers need a Athletic TE when that spot is full and doesn’t need anybody else. Why can’t Blanchflower be given a shot to show what he can do? Is it because you people want a Jimmy Graham or Gronkowski who can stretch the field rather being a blocker first? Or is it because you want Miller’s a** out the door so you can say “yep there it is, another hole for the Steelers to fill via the draft. Tell me why I get grief for defending Blanchflower but when you guys attack somebody like Jarvis Jones I’m made out to be the bad guy?

I don’t think there is much hate going on around here. It’s just a few folks sharing there opinions about there favorite team.

Vittorio Di Stazio March 1, 2015 - 7:50 pm

Ya see Bob this goes beyond opinions. This is now becoming a place where if I defend somebody like Jarvis Jones or Rob Blanchflower I get trashed for doing so. How may times did you guys blast me when I trashed Wheaton? You guys stood there and defended him but when I defend Jarvis Jones or Blanchflower I get made out to be the bad guy and I want to know why?

I think i’m going to skip this round as i really did spend some time on my first mock and i’m still sticking with them.
