It should come as no surprise that all 32 National Football League teams spend a great deal of time keeping an eye on each other. For every team that needs help at one position, there’s a team with an over-abundance of players at the same spot.
Therefore, teams are constantly scouting those positions of need of other teams. For example, despite the nice debut by kicker Garrett Hartley, don’t think for a second that the Steelers aren’t keeping tabs on kicking competitions in several other camps.
With this thought in mind, it should come as no surprise that there are scouts keeping their focus on the Steelers’ battle in the secondary and more specifically, the cornerbacks. One such guy in particular is Kevin Fogg who is having a very nice training camp to this point.
If we do the math (and bear with me here) then we’ll find that the Steelers have some serious decisions to make over the next few weeks. Let’s go ahead and pencil in Cortez Allen, William Gay and Brandon Boykin as “for sure” cornerbacks.
A decision has not yet been made on rookie Senquez Golson but let’s go ahead assume he’ll be placed on the Steelers’ Reserve/Injured List which means he’ll count for one of the 53 roster spots and can return to practice after week six and to the field after week eight.
That gives us four spots.
Guys left with realistic shots include Fogg, rookie Doran Grant, Antwon Blake and B.W. Webb. As popular as Blake is with fans, the reality is that right now, he’s on the bubble. I’m not saying he won’t make the roster but I’m not committing to saying he will.
If Grant goes on the Steelers’ practice squad, he will be picked up in a heartbeat by another team and the same can be said for Fogg. Teams needing a fourth or fifth corner would easily be in the market for their services. This is why coaches have such a difficult time making out that final 53-man roster.
Ultimately, the decision will come down to who performs better on special teams but in the final equation, who is the most vulnerable if left unprotected on the practice squad? Blake, Fogg or Grant?
We don’t know yet but you can bet your Terrible Towel there are NFL scouts who waiting patiently.
