SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Wideout Issue” Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

There’s a lot that can be said about the Pittsburgh Steelers but you can never say they can’t find quality wide receivers. Rookies Carl Pickens and Calvin Austin III have already demonstrated they could be major contributors this year. A problem still exists however. The Steelers are going to have to tell some pretty good players they are either going to the practice squad or they’re going elsewhere. Pencil in Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool along with the two guys above. That’s four wideouts. I have a hard time seeing Gunner Olszewski not making this team unless Mike Tomlin and Danny Smith believe they can get as much from someone else in the return game. Right now however I don’t see that. That brings us to five which is a number Tomlin has been content keeping in the past. Anthony Miller has had a very nice camp and has good history with Mitchell Trubisky. Miles Boykin’s best asset is as a Special Teams’ player but he’s been very inconsistent as a receiver. Cody White is probably the only other one with a shot right now. He has a decent chance of catching on somewhere should he get released. So while I’d really like to say they’ll go with six wide receivers my guy is leaning towards five. With three preseason games yet to play, injuries will happen and that will alter things but all of that aside, the top five are set in my mind.

The Podcast

Ian is on vacation with his family so we are thrilled to have Ellie Finnerty jump on with us. She’s going to give us her view of Deshaun Watson’s “punishment” and tell us her early thoughts on the Steelers. She’ll also tell us her favorite British swear words too. Join us for some great Steelers’ talk on the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc.

Tweet of the Day… I’m honestly to the point where I believe that Watson believes he did absolutely nothing wrong.

It’s Happening

I suggested the other day that Robert Spillane could be in line to start over Devin Bush and that looks more and more like a reality. With each passing day, Spillane is getting more and more reps alongside Myles Jack while Bush is getting less and less. There are a couple of ways to look at this. Either Bush still hasn’t returned to his pre-injury form or Spillane has made himself that much better. Of course it’s more likely that it’s a combination of both. Spillane does a lot of good things but there’s no question he’s limited when he’s forced to cover man to man. This situation, especially considering the lack of depth there now, bears watching.

Around the League

While I understand the need the Steelers had for a QB, I really liked Trevor Penning, the offensive tackle from Northern Iowa. Talent-wise, there were better tackles, but this kid had exactly the nasty attitude the Steelers’ O-Line needed. I mention him because he’s been tossed from practice down in New Orleans after numerous post-whistle skirmishes. I really wish our O-Line had that mentality… The NFL will appeal Deshaun Watson’s six-game suspension. Essentially, the ball is entirely in the NFL’s court here… The Steelers have brought in former Ohio State RB Master Teague to replace injured Jeremy McNichols who suffered a shoulder injury this week… David Morehouse, formerly a CEO with the Pittsburgh Penguins, has joined the Steelers as the Senior Advisor to President Art Rooney II. This could prove to be a very interesting move so stay tuned.
