SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Where We Stand’ Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

You know and I know the Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t done putting together their 53-man roster for their week one contest against the Cincinnati Bengals. What is yet to come, we do not know but have they done enough? Omar Khan added a versatile offensive lineman in Jesse Davis and a very capable backup EDGE rusher in Malik Reed. Where we stand can best be answered by something like this site where you can get the latest on how the Steelers are being viewed. I’m of the belief that the offensive line is ‘not ready for primetime’ but Mike Tomlin doesn’t care what I think. Davis does not have a very positive history when it comes to pass protection so his arrival doesn’t bring a lot of confidence. Reed however has a nice amount of sacks and quarterback pressures in his resume so I’m a little higher on what he can possibly do. Mitchell Trubisky will start at QB and that’s the right call for week one. Ultimately however, is this team as it is currently built capable of threatening for a division title? I’ll be sure to give you my thoughts and predictions in the coming days.

The Podcast

You can check out the latest edition of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc right here. We gave our thoughts on the roster cuts, trades and we unveiled our annual “Over/Under” picks for this season as well.

Tweet of the Day… Look, the Ravens have to be concerned about something or else this would have been done a long time ago. You can point to postseason failures but I have a feeling it’s more than that.

Steelers History

I’m very happy to have Gordon back doing our ‘Steelers History’ pieces this year. He is a tremendous fountain of knowledge!! This week he kicks off 2022 with a terrific look back at the moment the Steelers became winners.

Things to Consider

Most of you who read this column are more than likely quite knowledgeable about how the Steelers and the NFL in general work. That doesn’t mean however, that we should get a reminder. When players become available as so many have this week, we must recognize that the Steelers aren’t interested in them the way you think they should be. One problem is name recognition. We see a player we are familiar with because of a stellar college career and we automatically believe the Steelers should sign him. Remember that there are variables…. Does this person ‘fit’ what the Steelers currently do on offense or defense? Do they fit financially? Are they capable of playing more than one position? What is their personal history? Are there red flags in that history? And so on. As fans, we may think many guys would fit in Pittsburgh perfectly but that isn’t always the case. Just something to consider every time another player hits the market.

Random Steelers Thoughts

I do not believe the Steelers will look to add a safety. They had to be pleased that Damontae Kazee will only be out the first four or five weeks after they initially thought it was going to be much longer… T.J. Watt talked about the ‘low block’ that forced him out of the game Sunday. He called it “completely legal” but he most certainly hinted at the fact he isn’t crazy about it and I agree with him. I see no reason at all for anyone to go that low in that particular situation, especially because guys know a knee injury is a lot more damaging in the short run than a head injury… Good to see both Anthony McFarland and John LeGlue back on the Practice Squad. McFarland had a nice Camp and I think he can contribute when necessary. Same goes for LeGlue who can provide some relief when necessary. I would not either starting long-term but I’m OK with them in short bursts.
