SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Walls Closing In” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

Every day in the world of sports is like creeping into your house as a teenager well past your curfew. You know you’re late but you’re going to do everything possible to avoid the light getting turned on which of course means…. The parents have been waiting for you!!! In the current pandemic environment, this is what everyday life in sports is like. We are the kid silently coming in late and the pandemic is our parents waiting to snuff out our hopes. Across the country, collegiate sports are being shuttered and with news the that major conferences in college football are close to shutting it down I can’t help but wonder what the future of our Steelers is. Baseball is literally stumbling and bumbling its way through their season with games being postponed left and right. The St. Louis Cardinals haven’t played a game since July 27th. All of this feels like the walls are closing in but I refuse to give up. I’ll do my best to be Luke Skywalker and Han Solo in the trash compactor. I’ll use whatever I can find to keep the walls from crushing us. Ultimately this is up to the players, coaches and team personnel. If they continue to isolate themselves and their immediate families do the same then there’s a chance we can get a season completed. Otherwise, we better hope our parents are fast asleep.

Roster Watch

With Training Camp now in full swing and our Training Camp Previews almost done, Ian is out with his traditional “roster watch” for 2020. The unusual camp and lack of preseason is creating some very intriguing story lines. Check it out!

Tweet of the Day… And there it is. A month out but still something to look forward to.

Knowing We Know What We Don’t Know

Do you know how well Ben Roethlisberger will play in 2020? I don’t and no one else does either. We often get ahead of ourselves with these things and this is a perfect example. What we know is this; he looks good, he sounds good and everyone around him is overwhelmingly positive. What we don’t know is this; will the elbow hold up? Will he play as well as we expect? Is everyone being honest about where Ben and his arm really are? None of us -not you, not me, not Mike Tomlin, no one – can definitively say what Big Ben will do. I’m of the opinion that we have to recognize one simple fact. We don’t know!

The Cam Extension

It’s no secret that the Steelers and Cam Heyward would like to get an extension done for him prior to the season beginning. The Steelers have a long-standing policy that they do not do negotiations once regular season begins. Therefore, the two sides have just slightly over a month to get something done and it isn’t that both sides don’t, there is just a lot of uncertainty. The salary cap next season is expected to be WAY DOWN which is going to lead to a bloodbath of sorts in terms of teams having to cut players they just can’t afford. I still think Cam and the Steelers get something done but we just may have to wait longer than thought.
