SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Two Under Wraps” Edition

Good Wednesday to you Steelers’ Fans.

As is usually the case, the Steelers have started signing their draft picks from the bottom up. Yesterday it was announced the team had come to terms with two of their sixth round picks. Alabama Defensive Lineman Isaiah Buggs and Northern Illinois Linebacker Sutton Smith are both under wraps. Both men agreed to four year contracts. Getting the later round guys signed is fairly typical because there’s less money involved among other reasons. I suspect in coming days we will continue to see more of the draft picks signed. One note of interest if I may… Devin Bush’s agent is Drew Rosenhaus who also represents Antonio Brown.

It’s always a concern when long-time players walk away from the game. Will they adjust? Will the lack of structure affect them negatively? Will they be able to handle no longer playing the sport they’ve loved since childhood? It’s interesting to see how many former Steelers thrive away from the game. From Brett Keisel and Jerome Bettis to Hines Ward and Rocky Bleier these guys have found that there is indeed life after football.

Tweet of the Day… Um, I see what you’re getting at Lev but you do realize the big mistake of leaving millions on the table is one you can’t take back right?

As you look across the Steelers’ depth chart you’ll notice obvious issues at Tight End, Outside Linebacker and Free Safety. As I’ve stated previously I believe a trade or free agent signing of a tight end with experience is still coming. I do not expect much movement with the EDGE rushers and then there’s the free safety position where Sean Davis is essentially the only true free safety on the roster. Therefore, many are speculating that Eric Berry could be a target of the Steelers. With each passing day his price drops but this isn’t as easy as it sounds either. In 2015 and 2016 Berry appeared in all 32 of his team’s games. Since then, he’s played in just three games due to an Achilles’ tear and a problem with his heel. Berry is now 30 years old, battled Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and an ACL tear along with the previously stated injuries. If he were willing to take a very minor veteran deal I would consider it but any more than that is too big of a risk in my opinion.

[UPDATE]: Per steelers.com, the team has come to terms with both Benny Snell Jr and Diontae Johnson, their fourth and third round selections respectively. That’s now four of the Steelers’ picks signed with Isaiah Buggs and Sutton Smith inking their deals yesterday as mentioned above.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
