SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Twas’ the Day Before the Draft” Edition

Happy Hump Day Steelers’ Fans and what a mountain it is to climb! The Draft is on the down-side!

If you thought you heard or read some smokescreens before today then get ready…. There’s gonna be more smoke pouring from NFL teams than Spicoli’s van in ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High.’ Already we’ve heard the Browns are “very realistic” about Baker Mayfield at number one. I like Mayfield but I’m not buying that. You’re also going to hear tons of trade talk. Are the Bills moving up? Are the Broncos moving down? Will the Patriots swap both first rounders to move up and get a QB? That’s a mere sampling of some of the stuff that’s coming your way over the next 24 hours. Enjoy the ride.

14 years ago yesterday the Steelers drafted Ben Roethlisberger. It’s always interesting to me to go back and look at the chatter in the days leading up to that Draft. Perhaps most interesting of course was the fact the Browns passed on the homegrown star from Miami OH… There was also talk about Bill Cowher not wanting him but being overruled. Sometimes we have to be grateful that the organization does things the way they do. Sure, they’ve also had some failures but that happens in this business. 14 years later I think it’s safe to say that Big Ben was the right pick.

The crew here at SCB has come up with a Draft Big Board of our own. I had very little to do with this so all due credit to Cnic, Ian and Ben. I realize I’m biased but this is an excellent big board.

Tweet of the Day… I never say “never” but Kaboly has a point here.

I’ve seen where many of the national pundits have the Steelers drafting a cornerback. Louisville’s Jaire Alexander and Central Florida’s Mike Hughes are the two most often mentioned. While I can’t rule Alexander out because he’s from a Power 5 school and because the Steelers were at his Pro Day I feel like I can rule out Hughes. He’s had a bit of a checkered past and if we learned anything from last season’s Draft, the Steelers aren’t interested those guys right now.

I’ll be posting my mock shortly. Some will love it. Some will hate it. Some will be 50/50 on it. I would expect nothing less. It is after all, the NFL Draft where the takes are from one extreme to the other.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!!
