SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “This Bud is for Bud” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Friday to you Steelers fans.

The Pittsburgh Steelers made it official yesterday when Bud Dupree was officially put on the season-ending Injured Reserved list. He becomes the second linebacker this season (Devin Bush) to see his season end due to an ACL injury. I’ll get to where the Steelers go from here below because I wanted to save this space for Dupree. When he was drafted, the pressure was immense as it often is with any first round draft pick. But Dupree had to be a guy that would be better than previous first round pick Jarvis Jones who failed miserably. Dupree started slowly but worked on his craft and gradually got better and better. I don’t know how good Dupree ultimately could or will be but I for one appreciate the effort and hard work he put into making himself a better player. Did he benefit from the arrival of T.J. Watt? Of course he did and I believe that’s a big reason why his numbers went up but also perhaps why the team didn’t do a long-term extension with him as well. There remains a chance the Steelers could tag him again or he’ll head off into the free agency waters. Either way he’ll get a very nice pay day once he is fully recovered from his knee injury.

The Bell Tolls for Highsmith

Mike Tomlin didn’t mince words yesterday when he said that “it’s Highsmith’s turn to answer the bell.” The rookie was drafted with the idea that he may replace Dupree ultimately but probably not this soon. His first task may surprise you because it isn’t necessarily to rush the passer. Any outside backer in Pittsburgh is always required to set the edge against the run first and foremost. If you can’t do that consistently you aren’t staying on the field. That’s job one for Highsmith. Yeah, rushing the passer will be job 1-A if you will but he has to shut down the run first and in limited action so far he’s done fairly well.

Tweet of the Day… In case you didn’t know, Sam hates the Steelers’ OC.

The Podcast

We recorded Episode 198 of the Steel City Blitz Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc last evening. We covered the sloppy win over Baltimore, the injury to Bud Dupree and looked to the Washington Football team as well.

From the Training Table…

T Alejandro Villanueva (NIR) – DNP
TE Eric Ebron (NIR) – DNP
DE Tyson AluAlu (NIR) – DNP
DT Cameron Heyward (NIR) – DNP

WASHINGTON

Congrats T.J. Watt!!

The Steelers’ outside linebacker has been the AFC’s Defensive Player of the Month. Watt currently leads the NFL with 11 sacks. He has six passes defensed and an interception this season too. Perhaps the most impressive stat is that he also leads the NFL in tackles for loss with 19. That’s four more than the second place player. His TFL on Wednesday that moved the Ravens out of field goal range in the second half was a huge play.
