SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Tagging and Cutting” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Tuesday to you Steelers’ fans.

Yesterday the National Football League was like the only super hot chick at a party. With everyone focused on many other events in our world the NFL walked in and garnered a ton of attention whether it truly deserved it or not. From trades to signings it was a crazy day and I don’t think we’ve scratched the surface yet. Our Steelers were quite busy themselves. Not only did they place the Franchise Tag on Bud Dupree, but they also cut Mark Barron, Anthony Chickillo and Johnny Holton. Long-time Steelers’ Offensive Lineman Ramon Foster also retired ending speculation that he may have been cut. Tight End Vance McDonald also saw a restructure in his contract with five million converted to a signing bonus. With the League year beginning at 4pm Eastern tomorrow, I don’t think the Steelers are done by a long shot.

The Cuts

As soon as Dupree was tagged the writing was on the wall for both Chickillo and Barron. Chickillo has been a fine Special Teams player but as a backup outside backer he wasn’t worth five million a year. Barron was thought to be a guy that would really contribute defensively whether they were able to land Devin Bush or Devin White in the Draft or not but he disappointed. He struggled in coverage and was not nearly the effective tackler the Steelers expected. As for Holton, he showed flash in the preseason and found himself in the lineup but that came to end quickly. He had difficulty making plays and just wasn’t effective at all.

The Podcast

Ben, Ian and I got together for episode 167 of the SCB Steelers Podcast last night. We covered all of the Steelers’ activities from a busy Monday. Check it out right here.

Tweet of the Day… Ian may be on to something here.

And So It Is…

Steelers’ nemesis Tom Brady officially announced this morning that he was leaving the New England Patriots. Look, as much as it pains me to say it, he’s the best QB that’s played the game. That doesn’t mean I can’t stand him and the Pats but I have to be honest. I would say his destination is either Tampa Bay or the New York Giants. I suggest the G-Men because his family is already living in New York and Daniel Jones would benefit from playing behind Brady for a year or two.

Around the League

Bill O’Brien is a moron. If he really felt he needed to trade DeAndre Hopkins then is that really the best he could get in return?… Miami spent over $130 million guaranteed dollars yesterday and I’m not sure I like any of their moves… Good pickup for the Browns getting Austin Hooper… Stephon Diggs finally got out of Minnesota. Buffalo gave up a ton for him… lastly, if you’re wondering why the Steelers are signing anyone then you really aren’t a Steelers’ fan.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
