SCB Steelers’ Quick Hitters: The “Standing Pat” Edition

Good day to you Steelers’ Fans!

As you no doubt know by now the Pittsburgh Steelers did not make any moves prior to the NFL trade deadline yesterday. We know they had conversations about guys like Gareon Conley and Janoris Jenkins but one of two things happened. The asking price was more than the Steelers were willing to pay or Kevin Colbert decided to roll with the team he has. I tend to think it’s more of the former. I struggle to see Colbert and Mike Tomlin being content with Coty Sensabaugh and a struggling Artie Burns as their corner opposite Joe Haden. There’s another angle to consider however. Would an average to above average cornerback be enough to also compensate for help at linebacker? Rome wasn’t built in a day and I don’t think the Steelers’ D would have suddenly become dominant with just one addition. All that said, I still think trying to upgrade that CB spot would have been worth a draft pick in my mind.

Fans often use the New England Patriots as a measuring stick when it comes to making yourself better. The Pats did not make any moves either so if it again comes down to the Steelers and Pats? You go with what you got.

We re-capped the Steelers’ win over Cleveland and the lack of activity by the front office last night on the Steel City Blitz Steelers Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh.

Tweet of the Day… Well done Steelers!

Make sure you are following Ian’s tremendous coverage of the WPIAL Playoffs. I say it a lot but it’s the truth; his coverage is the best in Pittsburgh.

Congratulations to James Conner who has been named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week!

I think this would be a great week for the Steelers to turn up the turnover numbers. They seem to be getting closer to one of those games where they get multiple turnovers and that will likely start with pressure on Joe Flacco. The Steelers are currently -3 in turnover margin. That number has to get better if they are to get into the postseason.

As often as Ben Roethlisberger is in the shotgun I’m not overly concerned about his broken left index finger. It is likely to be more problematic when he takes snaps from under center. In this situation, his left hand is the bottom of the ‘V’ that is formed to receive the snap. Because he’s been doing this most of his life he should be able compensate without any issues.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!

Two names that have been of great discussion over the last 5 years. Todd Haley and Jarvis Jones. I screamed from the mountain tops “what are you thinking”. I am going to pat my self on the back. First with Jones you have a outside linebacker who IS stiff , slow, weak by nfl standards, Just not very good. But we had to watch him for 4 years. Then we had to watch Haley waste 5 years of Rothlisberger. While we were forced to watch our offense pound circles thru squares. Now with Kieth Butler We have awesome talent. But as long as it is next guy up instead of best guy up this will continue. I feel the talent is there it just is not being utilized properly. With this we are going to play press but they continue to run the same stuff.I also feel Dupree is starting to turn the corner but Burns has regressed steadily. And why hasn’t Brian Allen at least been given a chance? And don’t make excuses he has show tremendous energy and play on special teams.
