SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Small Change” Edition

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

Mike Tomlin clearly had no interest in many things yesterday during his weekly presser. He cared little for Tyler Boyd’s comments. He was definitely not going to re-hash that most bizarre fourth down play either. And he doesn’t appear to have any changes on the horizon. Those of you pining for Mason Rudolph are going to have to wait. Other changes don’t appear to be coming either and I’m not sure they should happen just yet anyway. If there’s any good news it’s that T.J. Watt, Diontae Johnson and possibly Alex Highsmith could very well be back on Sunday. Even at less than 100% I’ll take them on the field. Melvin Ingram was solid but I feel he’s so much better as a guy who gets 20-30 snaps a game rather than all of them. Jamir Jones went from a Training Camp darling to being cut. His trip to the waiver wire made room for Derrek Tuszka on the 53-man roster. I suspect there are some pretty fired up folks in the Steelers’ locker room right now who don’t like what they’re hearing from media and the fans. We’ll find out Sunday just what kind of impact that has.

Speaking of Tuszka…

I was surprised at how many snaps he received on Sunday so therefore we shouldn’t have been too shocked that he was named to the 53-man roster Tuesday. When a team makes a clear decision that quickly after a game then it’s pretty obvious they weren’t thrilled with Jones. I don’t recall watching Tuszka at any point and thinking, “this guy needs to be on the roster.” If Tomlin and Keith Butler were happy with him setting the edge, rushing the passer and tackling then there you go. That’s why he has a job and Jones doesn’t.

Tweet of the Day… This. NFL Game Pass not providing all-22 film is ridiculous.

Changes

Much has been in the last 72 hours about what changes Tomlin could make. His options are limited and that’s why I said earlier I’m not sure he should make any just for the sake of it. It isn’t like you have trusted veterans sitting behind some of these younger, struggling players. Perhaps the biggest change is not on the field. With such a young group of offensive linemen, I’m wondering if they shouldn’t have sought out a more veteran/experienced line coach. Adrian Klemm will remain in this position for the season simply because the Steelers almost never change in mid-stream but the unit is not coming together and doesn’t instill confidence at all.

Just Stop Already…

Can we please put a halt to all of the “Maybe Dwayne Haskins needs a package” and the “Aaron Rodgers sounds like he wants to come to Pittsburgh” crap? Let me start with the latter. Rodgers continues to manipulate the media and fans with his words and it’s to the point where he must just laugh his ass off. If I’m wrong I’ll gladly admit it but I don’t see him coming to the Steelers next year. As for Haskins, fans seem to be under this illusion that Haskins is really mobile and would work better behind this offensive line than either Big Ben or Mason Rudolph. Wrong. Haskins’ strength has always been his arm, not his legs and feet. If he plays, it isn’t because he can scramble.
