SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Sam I Am” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Tuesday to you Steelers fans.

Many of you were heartbroken yesterday when news broke that the New York Jets had traded quarterback Sam Darnold to the Carolina Panthers. There were many in Steelers Nation who believed that Darnold may have been the answer to the question of who is the next QB once Ben Roethlisberger leaves. The Panthers traded a 2021 sixth round pick plus a second and fourth round selection in 2022. Some are seeing this as “getting a good QB on the cheap” but let’s examine. First of all, this trade pretty much commits the Panthers to Darnold for next year and then his fifth-year option year in 2022. It makes zero sense to trade three picks if you aren’t picking up his option and are just keeping him for a year. Obviously the talking heads in Pittsburgh are giving us their opinions.

So in the same tweet he says the Steelers could have had Darnold for peanuts yet says he sucked because he played for the Jets. Not sure about you but I don’t want anyone who sucks regardless of what team they played for…. It seems that since Kevin Colbert pulled the trigger on the Minkah Fitzpatrick trade that the Steelers are willing to do anything. Perhaps they are but many fans would be bitching if we gave up three picks when the team is definitely in a rebuild mode whether they admit it or not. I think Darnold is a better QB than his numbers say but if you trade for him then he becomes, like Fitzpatrick and T.J. Watt, a guy waiting on a fifth year option. I just don’t believe the Steelers ever considered this move to be really honest.

Tweet of the Day… Yes it was. Did a good job but needs to loosen up a bit.

Pro Days

Texas Tech is the final Power 5 school to host a Pro Day and is the only one on the docket today. They have three potential draft picks in  Jack Anderson, Zech McPhearson and T.J. Vasher. The latter is a 6’6″ wide receiver who will get some looks.

What Wouldn’t Surprise Me…

I’m telling you right now that I would be more surprised if the Steelers took a running back or an offensive tackle at 24 than if they didn’t. Obviously what none of us can predict is how the draft unfolds. I feel confident in saying that there will be five QBs off the board for sure when the Steelers get on the clock. That leaves 18 picks before them. Kyle Pitts, Penei Sewell, DeVontae Smith, Ja’Marr Chase, Jaylen Waddle, Rashawn Slater and Micah Parsons I’ll also say will be gone. That leaves roughly 11 spots. Here’s what I’m getting at… We have no idea who will be there and even if it’s Najee Harris, Travis Etienne, Sam Cosmi or Jaylen Mayfield I don’t see the Steelers taking them.
