SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Rudy Market” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

While not 100% official, it looks very likely that Ben Roethlisberger will be returning as the quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I explained why I’m not ready to state conclusively that this is a done deal with this piece last night but as of right now Seven is returning. The other side of this equation is Mason Rudolph. The Steelers spent a third round pick on him and he is now entering the final year of his rookie contract. If you’re in his position, would you really want to stay here? I’ve heard numerous times that his ‘camp’ is not happy with how things have progressed and that the possibility that he asks for a trade is quite high. So what, if any, market would there be for Rudy? My best guess is that he could fetch as high as a sixth round pick and honestly? If I’m the Steelers I’m taking it. You’d rather get something for him if you feel he’s going to go sign elsewhere in 2022 anyhow right? The reality is that very few teams will likely trade for him. The Raiders could be one team as Mike Mayock had him rated pretty high but unless a team suffers significant QB injuries I’m guessing Rudy plays out the string in Pittsburgh before moving on after the season.

Tweet of the Day… Derrick brings logic.

Oh JuJu…

I truly believe that JuJu Smith-Schuster is NOT toying with our emotions. I think, as he again stated yesterday, that he really does want to be in Pittsburgh and finish his career here. As of this writing however the math just doesn’t work in his favor. He will easily command $16-17 million per year on the open market and there is zero chance the Steelers can afford that. They still have T.J. Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick to deal with as well. There’s a big part of me that just wishes that JuJu would keep his thoughts to himself for they only get the fan base excited and unprepared for the reality that is to come.

What Would Surprise Me vol.2

The Steelers have a growing issue at cornerback and more specifically, what to do with Mike Hilton and Cam Sutton. What would really surprise me here is if both were back. Because of Sutton’s coverage skills I believe he’ll garner more attention on the open market. Hilton is much better near the line of scrimmage and in tight quarters. As far as tackling, Hilton is much better than Sutton is. But as I stated, pass coverage is coveted in the NFL these days. As of right now I see Hilton back before Sutton.
