SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Rookies Arrival” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Friday to you Steelers’ fans.

This weekend brings the arrival of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ rookie class to the Steel City for their first-ever Training Camp. What awaits them is something I really don’t have an answer for. Why? Because this is new and uncharted territory for ALL of the players. Normally this time of year we are waiting for players to arrive in Latrobe. We see them carrying in flatscreen TVs and La-Z-Boy chairs while doing a few interviews along the way. With the pandemic situation, the Steelers are indeed entering a new arena along with the rookies. They’ll get to sleep in their own beds and have the finest accommodations any camp invitee could have at the Steelers’ facility. Normally the Steelers have to move the facility to Latrobe if you will but now everything is right there. As we surmised several times on the podcast, much of the action will take place at the facility due to multiple fields. Heinz Field will see some Camp action but the majority will be on the South Side. As of right now, things are on schedule in terms of players reporting but… There are several pieces of language that still need to be worked out between players and teams regarding testing and player safety. Cam Heyward has been pretty vocal about this on Twitter.

Owners Meeting

The NFL Owners will meet today (would hate to be Dan Snyder) to discuss a number things related to getting the season underway. Something they have to take into account is local and state rules related to the pandemic. With 32 teams, many states are represented and teams must comply with the rules. Those things can usually be negotiated and I expect they will but I continue to see more and players expressing concern. As I said yesterday, I think some players will opt out.

The Podcast

I shook things up a bit as we all adjust to things going on in our lives. Along with our usual shows I’m going to start infusing some one-on-one interviews. Yesterday I sat down with Ford Fan Hall of Famer Rick Holman. He talked about how crazy the last 18 months have been for him, what he’s willing to sacrifice to go to Heinz Field this fall and more.

Tweet of the Day… One Steelers’ Rook has arrived!! Welcome Alex!

Two Thoughts on Washington

1. The story finally came out yesterday and it’s pretty awful. As the father of a daughter I can tell you that hits me a little harder.

2. The fact that so many people were thinking this was going to be “so much bigger and more salacious” has taken away from the actual story. That’s sad because there is some really bad stuff alleged to have taken place here.

Dan Snyder could survive this but “I didn’t know” and just plain ignorance has sunk other owners before.

Some Good News

For those of you who are fans of high school football in Pennsylvania, PIAA announces this week they are currently planning to move forward with their fall season. As you know, Ian does a terrific job covering WPIAL HS Football action for us and is looking forward to it again!
