SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Right Guy, Right Tackle” Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers’ Fans.

Apparently I am missing something when it comes to the Steelers’ Right Tackle position. It appears that there is some consternation about just who takes over the job from the now departed Marcus Gilbert. You’ll notice I said “now departed…” Actually, Gilbert hasn’t been around his right tackle position for quite some time. Since 2016, Gilbert has played in 25 of a possible 48 games for the Black and Gold. Since 2017, he’s played in just 12 of 32 games. So when analysts and fellow bloggers wonder who “replaces” Marcus Gilbert, perhaps the question should “Who solidifies the position?” Chris Hubbard did such a fine job in 2017 that he was rewarded with a big contract from Cleveland. Last season saw Matt Feiler play very well in Gilbert’s stead and even Chuks Okorafor, a rookie, played solidly in his one start there when Feiler was injured. So what we have now is a race between Feiler, Okorafor and oft-injured Jerald Hawkins. Right now it is Feiler’s job to lose but there are two things to consider. First, we don’t know exactly what the plans are of Shaun Sarrett, the new OL Coach and those of Mike Tomlin as far as the best fit for the position. Secondly, we have to see how things play out in Training Camp and through the preseason. There’s no question that Feiler has the inside position but there’s a lot that can change. Most importantly though is the understanding that this really isn’t about replacing Gilbert. That ship sailed a long time ago.

Tweet of the Day… I will never know what the men on this day 75 years ago must have been feeling. I cannot imagine it and I will not even try to because their mission was among the most dangerous in the history of the modern world. They have my greatest respect and appreciation.

You probably saw the story of Le’Veon Bell returning home after a workout to discover over $500,000 in jewelry had been stolen by his two girlfriends. Yes, he referred to them as his “two girlfriends.” I suppose I could pile on Bell here big time but I’ll move on and just simply ask the question, “Why wouldn’t you have that much jewelry in a safe?”

T.J. Watt was asked about rookie linebacker Devin Bush yesterday. “He’s quicker than snot and making a lot of plays out there,” said Watt. I don’t know how fast snot really is but I’m guessing where T.J. is involved it must be pretty damn quick.

From Gerry Dulac’s Chat this week over at the post-gazette…

Big Ed : Hi Gerry! Just read a article from Ed over at the Athletic on Artie Burns. Do you think he is cut before training camp?
Gerry Dulac: Ed who?

I believe this is what the kids used to call “throwing some shade.” Guessing Gerry is just messing around with his former long-time colleague Ed Bouchette.

I’m still struggling to understand how Anthony Chickillo got $8 million to stay with the Steelers. The claim was that the Patriots were interested in him but it wouldn’t be the first time the Pats have feigned interest in a Steeler in order to drive up the price. Chick is a nice Special Teams’ guy but I’m not impressed with him on the EDGE.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
