SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Return to Latrobe” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

Earlier today, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced that they would once again be holding Training Camp in Latrobe at St. Vincent College. After holding it on the south side and at Heinz Field due to the pandemic, the return likely also coincides a return for the fans as well. We do not yet know what, if any, protocols will be in place but it seems very fair to suggest that fans will once again be welcome to watch the Steelers practice. Understand that this isn’t some “small thing” either. For two straight years, bars, restaurants, grocery stores gas stations etc all lost out on the money that comes from thousands of fans coming to see the team. They were already dealing with losses due to the pandemic and then this just made things even worse. For any Steelers’ fan, a pilgrimage to St. Vincent College is something you must do at least once in your lifetime. The environment is truly awesome and you’ll never be able to get any closer to the players and coaches than you will there. This is great news!

Tweet of the Day… As many of you know, I never say “never” but I just don’t see this happening.

What the Hell?

Bill Barnwell of ESPN usually does a really good job of writing. But like many writers who are on a deadline, Barnwell can just “phone it in” at times. Today was one of those times. In his very creative mock draft in which all 32 selections are traded, he suggests the Steelers would trade their first and third round picks this year to the Niners for Jimmy Garoppolo and their second and fourth round picks. While I understand that Garopollo is more accomplished than Mitchell Trubisky, Garoppollo is also coming off shoulder surgery and likely won’t be ready for some time. The “upgrade” from Trubisky to Garoppolo is minimal in my book. While I like the uniqueness of his activity, this just doesn’t make any sense to me.

New QB Coach

The Steelers brought on an assistant quarterbacks coach yesterday by the name of David Corley. He played collegiately at William & Mary which is where Head Coach Mike Tomlin played. It is my understanding that his hiring keeps the Steelers in compliance with new NFL hiring practices. I wouldn’t look into it any further than that.

Miles for Miles

The Steelers didn’t have to travel too far to bring in wide receiver Miles Boykin. The former third round pick of the Baltimore Ravens was claimed of waivers by the Steelers yesterday. He’s about the same size as Chase Claypool and played with him at Notre Dame. While he has excelled on Special Teams, he’s been a big disappointment as a wide receiver. If the Steelers can make him into a fourth wide receiver I’d be just fine with that.
