SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘QB Questions’ Edition

Good Friday to you Steelers fans.

As of this writing, we do not know who will start at quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday in the preseason finale. This isn’t exactly anything you should be fretting over but it does create some talking points. With Chris Oladokun gone, that leaves Mitchell Trubisky, Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph. My gut tells me we will see all three but Rudolph will once again get the lions’ (pun intended) share of the snaps. In fact, don’t be surprised if Rudy starts and plays the entire game. I don’t think that happens but it wouldn’t shock me. I just can’t see all three of these guys being on the roster. Here’s a couple of questions.

  1. Would the Steelers really keep Rudolph as a third QB at $3 million?
  2. Is it possible the plan is for Pickett to actually be the third QB?

  3. If Rudolph is taking all or most of the snaps Sunday, does that mean it’s just a show for potential trade bait?

  4. Have we really seen enough from Mitchell Trubisky?

By this time next week I suspect we will have all of those questions answered and probably more.

NOTE: Tomlin said this afternoon that Mitchell Trubisky will start this Sunday.

The Podcast

We held episode 282 of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc on Wednesday this past  week. Here it is for your listening and/or viewing pleasure.

Tweet of the Day… Hilarious!

Donald

Let’s be very clear here that what Aaron Donald did in the Rams’ joint practice with Cincinnati was 100% wrong. Let’s also be clear that joint practices continue to be a bad idea and almost always end in this fashion.  What is absolutely stupid (there’s just no better word for it) is that the NFL claims it has no jurisdiction over practices. Therefore there won’t be any discipline. Let’s examine that for a second… “The NFL has no jurisdiction over practice.” You’ve gotta be kidding me right? This league has jurisdiction over EVERYTHING! It’s a complete joke. We know what happened to Myles Garrett yet nothing will happen to Donald. Unreal.

Random Thoughts

Mark Kaboly reported this week that Connor Heyward has been taking reps at fullback. Two things here. This could be because Derek Watt has been battling a shoulder injury and Heyward could have to slide in there week one. On the other hand, it could also mean that the completely under-used Watt could be a cap casualty. Keep an eye here… Calvin Austin III has yet to play this preseason. I’m starting to wonder if he doesn’t get stashed on IR and would be set to return after week six. This would allow the Steelers to add another receiver to the roster… The Lions are reportedly going to play their starters for a half. That’s good news for the Steelers’ troubled offensive line who needs work. Detroit has a solid group upfront and they will challenge our OL which they sorry need.
