SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Preseason Wrap-Up” Edition

Good Friday to you Steelers’ Fans.

The Pittsburgh Steelers finished the 2019 Preseason at 3-1 following a 25-19 loss in Carolina. Let’s not hesitate one second further. Here are my thoughts from last night’s game.

Guys That Acquitted Themselves Well

If there were any lingering doubts about Mason Rudolph being the backup quarterback this year then we can erase them. He was 7 for 11 for 125 yards and a TD… Tuzar Skipper cemented a roster spot in my opinion. He recorded 8 tackles and racked up 2 sacks. I just don’t see how you keep him off the roster… I’m biased because he attended my alma mater Western Michigan but LB Robert Spillane has made the most of his playing time. He recorded 6 tackles and a sack. He won’t make the the roster but this guy works his tail off… Johnny Holton had another nice game with three catches for 86 yards and a score. He’s a long shot but he’s making the decision not to keep him very difficult… Another MAC linebacker who had a big night was Jayrone Elliott who got the sack, the strip and the return for touchdown all on one play.

Tweet of the Day… This is incredibly accurate. Rudolph is light years better than he was last preseason but we all need to hit the brakes a bit on such talk.

Guys Who I’m Left Wondering About

I remain unimpressed with Benny Snell as a runner. There’s little to zero burst and he struggles to make guys miss. 8 carries for 12 yards is not cutting it. He’s a better receiver and blocker than I first imagined but the running is average at best… Josh Dobbs was a victim of bad luck. He never really had a chance to get going because the defense scored keeping his unit off the field. Still, the decision to throw across his body and back into the middle of the field is one a veteran player can’t make… Sutton Smith actually made a few plays last night but he didn’t do nearly enough to make this roster. He’s likely headed for the Practice Squad… If you’re tired of me saying it imagine how tired I am of typing it but the Steelers need tight end help. It’s that simple… Chuks Okorafor was a guy I thought was ready to challenge Matt Feiler for the right tackle Jon and I was wrong. Okorafor did not have a good preseason often getting over-matched with both power and speed…

Looking Ahead

All NFL teams must be down to their 53-man rosters by 4pm Eastern tomorrow. What typically happens here is that each team monitors what other teams are doing and some of that is based on chatter. For example, let’s say the Steelers are looking for a tight end. Teams that believe they may have a tight end worth trading for a draft pick will float that out there. Many teams will assume that if the tight end isn’t traded then he’ll be cut. The problem is that you may not get him so is trading a sixth or seventh round pick worth it? This is one of many examples of why when the 53-man roster is set, it really isn’t set like we assume it is.

On to the regular season Steeler Nation!
