SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Hey Skipper!” Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers’ fans!

Tonight is the final preseason game of 2019 (thank you deity of your choice) and there are several guys who are literally fighting for their professional football lives. One guy that I believe has done more than enough is Tuzar Skipper. Sometimes the stars align just right and that’s part of why Skipper will make this roster. Both Ola Adeniyi and Anthony Chickillo are banged up which means the Steelers have to have depth at Outside Backer. Honestly, Skipper has mostly seen snaps against second and third team players but… He has excelled in those situations. He will immediately be a solid special teams’ player and for the short term, should be able to adequately give Bud Dupree or T.J. Watt a quick rest when necessary. Skipper is the prime example of a guy who has made plays to distinguish himself and benefited from the absences of others.

The Latest Podcast is Up!

We gave you our 53-man roster projection last night on the Steel City Blitz Steelers Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh. Ben and Ian joined me and we had some great banter as usual. Check it out and as always please give us some feedback on whatever platform you use to listen!

Tweet of the Day… From our great friend Joe here. I am 100% serious when I say this but I’ve never even heard this song.

What I’m Watching Tonight

You have to start with the quarterbacks. While Josh Dobbs will start, Mason Rudolph should get the same amount of snaps. I also believe this is a last-ditch effort to get Dobbs some exposure so that other teams may come calling for a draft pick… I’m watching tight ends not named ‘Vance McDonald.’ Because Zach Gentry was a fifth round draft pick there seems to be some bias that he’ll get a roster spot. I’m not so sure that Kevin Rader isn’t the guy simply because he’s a better blocker. That said, I still think they find a waived, veteran tight end over the weekend… I’m watching Isaiah Buggs because I think he’s got a borderline shot at making the roster with Lavon Hooks lost for the season. I still think he goes to the practice squad… I’m watching offensive linemen like Fred Johnson, Patrick Morris and Derwin Gray. Of the three, I think Johnson has the best chance to make the roster but both Gray and Morris offer some positive things too… Lastly, I’m watching those fifth and sixth receivers. Johnny Holton, Diontae Spencer, Trey Griffey, Eli Rogers and so on all have work to do despite the fact I believe Rogers will make the roster.

What I’m Hoping For Tonight

My overriding concern for tonight is health. Injuries in football are as common as the sun coming up everyday but I’m hoping the Steelers can come through tonight without any major problems.

Have a great day Steeler Nation!

A crazy thought i had, Artie Burns for Cameron Brate. This would solidify a weakness and give Burns a fresh start. No one really talks about it but Burns isn’t that bad his style of play just doesn’t mess well with what the Steelers do. Brate is an above average TE/ H back and would instantly turn a weakness to a strength. Tampa also wouldn’t mind letting a 6 million dollar a year back up go. In my opinion this move would really round out the team out. But it’s just a crazy thought
