SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Post Vince” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

While Vince Williams certainly wouldn’t be the first player to ever retire and then return, he seems very content with his decision. I think by the time we do the podcast tonight we’ll have more information for you on what led to this decision. For now though we have to look ahead because a week ago the Pittsburgh Steelers were concerned about their lack of depth at outside linebacker and they addressed it by signing Melvin Ingram. Now that problem shifts inside. Devin Bush is fully cleared to play after his ACL injury and Robert Spillane will enter as his partner in crime in the middle. But what then? We already know the Steelers spend almost 70% of their time in specialty packages which means Spillane isn’t on the field as often as Bush. But who spells these guys? Ulysees Gilbert has a lot of tools but his persistent injuries have him running out of opportunities. Rookie Buddy Johnson is very unknown right now as well. Marcus Allen was valiant in his efforts last season but at 215lbs he’s just not a viable option. Miles Killebrew, who came over from Detroit, is more of a Special Teams player and then you have guys short on experience and long on something to prove. It will be very curious to see how the Steelers address this. Does such little time in the base 3-4 motivate some of this? I’m excited to see it shake out.

The Podcast

Tonight on the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc we will obviously have a lot to cover. Williams of course but also the signing of Ingram, the collection of offensive linemen, the start of Training Camp and a whole lot more. Tune in!!

Tweet of the Day… Always love seeing these young men coming into Camp!

Unreal

There is no question that Ben Roethlisberger is the most criticized athlete in the history of Pittsburgh sports. I’m certain some of you will have arguments but I’m not listening. Case in point was yesterday. Big Ben was photographed walking into the facility and before the photo even stopped loading on websites the criticism was there. “He doesn’t look like he’s in shape… What happened to this workout he’s been doing?… Same old story coming in out of shape…” What’s interesting is that most of these comments come from people who I guarantee wish they looked as good. Secondly, these are the same people who would bitch that if he was too light and wasn’t prepared for the physicality this year would bring. The guy has not been what I would a “physical specimen” since his early years. He is what he is and I don’t care what he looks like. I’m more interested in how he performs.

A Major Thank You!

Yesterday I received some great news. Frank Walker, the Pittsburgh Area Attorney who ha sponsored these “Quick Hitters” for the last three years has agreed to sponsor it again. As so many of you know, this isn’t my “real job” and I/We do it simply because of our passion for the Steelers and our relationships with so many in Pittsburgh. We can’t do this without help from people like Frank.
