SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Pickens a Winner’ Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

Every single year there is a Training Camp star that emerges for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Guys like Baron Batch, Justin Hunter and Justin Brown gave the fans plenty of exciting and hopeful moments in Latrobe. Once the regular season rolled around however, a very different story emerged. George Pickens is without question the ‘flavor of the month’ at St. Vincent College and while I cautioned two weeks ago that we need to relax a bit, he continues to be a stud. I’m not going to sit here and type superlatives about Pickens like so many others are but… Pickens feels like a guy who will not be a flash in the pan. He is literally dominating the Steelers’ secondary by making one big play after another. What happens in Camp is a far different animal than what happens in the regular season but right now Pickens is already making himself a fan favorite and if makes plays early in the season then I’ll gladly eat crow about tempering our expectations.

Tweet of the Day… This should be interesting.

The Bos

Chris Boswell being paid as much as Baltimore’s Justin Tucker did not last long. The Ravens gave their future Hall of Fame kicker a nice raise to make sure he stayed as the NFL’s highest paid ball striker. Don’t let this take anything away from Boswell. While most would agree that Tucker has a stronger leg, Boswell has been terrific in his career save for the one injury-plagued season where he struggled. Pretty damn good for a guy who was brought in as an emergency player when the Steelers were going through kickers like band aids on a gunshot wound.

Thoughts on the Preseason Starting Tonight

Week One kicks off this evening. Baltimore plays Tennessee and believe it or not, the Ravens have won 20 straight preseason games. The guy I’m most curious to see though is Malik Willis, the third round draft pick of the Titans. You’ll recall that Willis was the guy most thought the Steelers would draft and didn’t. Trust me, if he plays well tonight, there will be Steelers’ fans taking note… New England will not play their starters tonight which is interesting. The last ten days or so Mac Jones has struggled according to people close to the team. That bears watching as the Patriots will come in to Acrisure Stadium week two.
