SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Pass on Winston” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Thursday to you Steelers’ fans or what I like to call “day four of coronavirus recess.”

Let me get right to it. The Steelers do not need Jameis Winston. They need help at tight end. They need help at safety. They need help at inside linebacker. They need help at offensive line and they need help on the defensive line. I know, I know, I know… “But we have to have a veteran backup!!!” I have not ruled out that the Steelers know this too despite what they say about Mason Rudolph and Duck Hodges. But why get a guy who threw 30 interceptions last season? A backup has one, primary job; take care of the football. You also have to consider the style of play. The Steelers under Randy Fichtner have largely stuck with Todd Haley’s “get the ball out quickly” offense. And to that point it would seem the Steelers are also headed for a more stable and effective running game. I think Winston has the opportunity to still be a solid QB in the NFL but I just don’t see it in Pittsburgh when you consider other needs and finances.

Tweet of the Day… I’m biased because Ellie is part of SCB but she’s absolutely right.

Madden Sim Day 1

As some of you know, in my ‘real life’ I’m an educator and like many across the country I’m currently not working. Besides doing this and preparing online things for my students I decided to simulate a full season of Madden ’20 every day. Yesterday was day one (Steelers finished 6-9-1) and the Browns defeated the Cowboys 42-21 in Super Bowl 54. This is why they are called “simulations.”

The Lowdown on Watt

Had a chance yesterday to chat with Chargers’ Superfan and Blogger Booga Peters. Here’s what he told me about what we can expect from Derek Watt. “Deceptive speed and even better quickness and catches the ball well… really good at getting those third and shorts… Really good lead blocker who will body up any linebacker… Great Special Teams player… Great teammate who will be loved by fellow players.”

Buccin’ Brady

So it appears that Tom Brady is headed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the rumor is that he wants to bring his “buddy” Antonio Brown with him. There’s a very big reason why Brady likes Brown and it’s not because he’s a good rapper. You saw the same thing I did with Brady last year and that was a definite decline in his deeper throws. Therefore, Brady wants guys who are big ‘yards after catch’ guys and AB fits that bill. The shorter Brady has to throw the ball the better. Keep in mind that Brown is still facing action from the NFL so when he puts a jersey on is anyone’s guess.

Have a great day Steeler Nation and be safe!
