SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Out for Summer” Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers’ Fans.

Today is the final day of the Steelers’ mandatory mini-camp and when it ends it will look like kids leaving school on their final day of the school year. I can relate… Today is also my last day of the school year too so I feel the excitement. For the players, most will continue to condition and prepare for the grueling season ahead while slipping in a vacation or two. Each player does it differently than the next. Veterans have been down this road before and know what to expect while the younger players are still trying to grasp what “being in shape” will really mean when Training Camp starts.

We discussed the latest from Mini-Camp, played some “True-False” and a whole lot more last night on the Steel City Blitz Steelers Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh. Give it a listen!

Here is your Steelers’ Training Camp Schedule courtesy steelers.com. Dates of interest include First open practice on July 26th at 255pm… the scrimmage at Latrobe Memorial Stadium on August 2nd at 7pm… Heinz Field Practice Sunday August 4th… And the final open practice on August 16th at 255pm.

Tweet of the Day… John McKay had some of the greatest one-liners ever while coaching the expansion Buccaneers.

We discussed this on the podcast last night but I think it bears being said here… At some point, JuJu Smith-Schuster will need to stop addressing questions about Antonio Brown. JuJu is being professional and he’s answering each question that comes along and I respect that but unfortunately we live in a world of soundbites. Anything he says can be taken and spun into whatever context the spinner chooses. In other words, the less JuJu says about AB the less chance AB has to comment on.

I’m not going to beat around the bush here… I think Chris Boswell is in trouble. Now that doesn’t mean he’s going to be cut or beaten out by Matthew Wright, it means that he has a lot of people to convince including himself. I said a couple of weeks ago that Wright can’t be on par with Boswell – he has to be head and shoulders above – but Boswell can be his own worst enemy if he isn’t consistent and erasing doubt that he’s bounced back.

Ben Roethlisberger had some pretty glowing reviews of rookie receiver Diontae Johnson yesterday saying “he catches everything.” Big Ben admitted he threw some balls high, low, away… you name it and the kid was still catching it. Let’s hope that is a sign of things to come.

Apparently Steelers’ rookie Justin Layne was on with Mark Madden yesterday and he eventually hung up which angered Madden to the point where he claimed on Twitter that Layne was making a “big —-ing mistake.” Perhaps what Madden didn’t know was that Layne said immediately afterward that he was having trouble hearing Madden and that the connection was poor. I’m not saying Layne couldn’t have handled it differently but why does Madden feel the need to pick a fight with at least one guy from every draft class? I honestly don’t get it.

Have a great Thursday Steeler Nation!
