SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Dead Zone” Edition

Good Friday to you Steelers’ Fans.

Well, it’s here. It’s the ‘Dead Zone’ which unlike the Stephen King book is 100% non-fiction. I hope anyway… This is the time when our Steelers have no obligations to the team. They have roughly 40 days until they report to Training Camp and during that time is when many of us hold our collective breath. So many of these players are still young men who will make poor choices and all we can do is hope that none of those poor choices happen this summer. For most, they will continue to train and condition and prepare for the season but they’ll also find some time for fun and frivolity. I guarantee there will be at least one player across the league that finds himself in some trouble. Here’s hoping he isn’t a Steeler.

I learned last evening that Justin Layne wasn’t completely without fault after his abrupt end to an interview with Mark Madden. He may have also missed another interview with Steelers Nation Radio. If accurate, and I believe it to be, Layne needs to get himself in order. He has tremendous opportunities with the Steelers and this kind of stuff doesn’t help build on them.

Tweet of the Day… We are continuing to help out a friend in need through our podcast sponsor 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh. Please consider whether you’re a Steelers’ fan or Bears’ fan.

I do not know when it will happen but I feel confident it will. At some point the Steelers have to add veteran depth at the tight end position. We saw the Pats do it yesterday with a trade to get Michael Roberts from Detroit for a late round draft pick. This doesn’t have to be a guy that you expect to play every down but it should be a guy that can block and can be dependable. The depth after Vance McDonald just isn’t going to cut it.

One of the most anticipated things in all of Steelers’ Training Camp is “Backs on Backers.” This is where running backs battle linebackers in pass rush situations and the players all know that all eyes are on them. There is word that the NFL is encouraging the Steelers to stop doing it. They have already outlawed ‘Oklahoma’ and ‘Bull in the Ring’ so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised but I have to wonder when this game no longer resembles the football I grew up with… Actually, I think that time is here.

Have an outstanding weekend Steeler Nation!
