SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘O-Line, Oh Boy’ Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

Sounds like a broken record doesn’t it? “There was a lot to like about the Steelers but that Offensive Line was not good.” There are many things that can happen between now and the end of the season but realistically speaking, I don’t have much hope for this O-Line right now. That doesn’t mean it can’t get better, in fact it better get better in a damn hurry. Over the first two preseason games, it’s hard to say a lot of good things. Chuks Okorafor has probably been the most consistent and Mason Cole has been adequate. James Daniels was supposed to be the big off-season signing and he’s been less than impressive at key moments. Then there’s the left guard spot. Kevin Dotson can’t seem to stay 100% healthy and Kendrick Green is in over his head. He’s consistently overpowered or missing his block period. It’s time to admit this was a bad draft pick. The Steelers have about $9 million in cap space but any move to shore up the O-Line would result in giving up high draft picks.

The Podcast

In case you missed it, we made our first-ever ‘live’ podcast last week. Thanks to those who jumped on with us and interacted. Lots of great stuff on the Steelers of course. It’s the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc of South Florida.

Tweet of the Day…  Talk about cringe-worthy

The Debate

There’s been a growing conversation in the hours after the Jacksonville game about why starting Kenny Pickett behind this line is a bad idea. First of all, Mitchell Trubisky is going to start game one barring some weird injury because I doubt he plays against the Lions. Secondly, Mike Tomlin has to decide if he believes Kenny Pickett can be successful behind this line. Some have suggested that if you don’t play him because of how bad the O-Line is then you’re living in your fears. No, you’re living in reality. If I bought a Ferrari I’m not entering it in a crash-up derby. Sure, at some point, if Trubisky isn’t getting the job done then Tomlin will be forced to play Pickett. Until then, there’s no rush.

Random Thoughts

I know Benny Snell had a nice catch and TD on Saturday but I’m ready for Jaylen Warren to take his role. Warren is better on blitz pick-up, catches the ball more consistently and is a more dynamic runner… Mark Robinson is going to make this roster and might even push for some time at inside backer during games. While limited in coverage, he’s got a great motor and tackles with violence… I’m still not sure why Kenny Pickett only got eight snaps Saturday night but I’ve got some theories… People like to rag on Mason Rudolph but the safety he took on the intentional grounding was not his fault. He didn’t have a chance as the pressure coming from his right was on him before he finished his drop… While he has work to do, I really like Demarvin Leal. He plays with great energy and has some pass rush moves you don’t normally see from a rookie… Damontae Kazee has been a very nice addition to the secondary. Nothing flashy but does a really good job in coverage and in tackling… I think James Pierre’s time in Pittsburgh is just about over. He’s too far down the depth chart right now… I’m going to be really curious to see how Matt Canada uses Connor Heyward. He’s more athletic than I anticipated but he’s also limited too.
