SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “O-Line Collection” Edition

by Steeldad

Good Wednesday to you Steelers fans.

Some people collect sports cards or bobble heads or stamps or even cars. The Pittsburgh Steelers collect offensive linemen. On one hand it makes sense. The current iteration of this unit is so unknown and so unproven that you really do have to overturn every rock in hopes of finding a few gems. On the other hand it looks a bit like the Steelers are desperate and trying to find any port in a storm. I think the answer is a bit of both. Mike Tomlin and Kevin Colbert are anxious to create competition. No player along the line should feel 100% confident in their status as a starter. Arguments could be made for Trai Turner or a few others but no one is going to be handed a damn thing. The more competition you create the harder guys will play in an effort to earn their respective job. This is often what separates the haves and have nots. With all of the attention paid to the signing of OLB Melvin Ingram there was also the signing of tackle Chaz Green. Green was most recently with Indianapolis and has just eight starts in nearly forty games. In other words he becomes another guy who has a shot and that’s about it.

And About That Ingram Guy

I wasn’t surprised when the Steelers signed the former Pro Bowl EDGE rusher Melvin Ingram and I doubt you were either. I laid out all of the reasons why this was needed and what you should expect his role to be last evening. Needless to say his addition is vital at a position where depth was a monstrous question mark.

Tweet of the Day… Looking pretty damn good Seven!

Players Report

Seems like summer just started and already the Steelers are reporting to Training Camp. The traditional arrivals at St Vincent College where players haul in their own recliners, mattresses and large screen TVs is on hold for a second straight year. Instead, the players like Ben Roethlisberger above are showing up today with their iPads and not much else. Tomorrow will be the team’s first official practice of 2021 and I literally could not be happier this day is here.

Oh That Other Signing

Melvin Ingram wasn’t the only guy the Steelers brought in this week. They also signed offensive tackle Chaz Green. He was most recently with Indianapolis. He has played in 37 career games with eight starts since being drafted by Dallas out of Florida in the third round of the 2016 Draft. The fact that the Steelers are stockpiling tackles at an alarming rate will be a topic of conversation on tomorrow night’s SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing, Inc.
