SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Nuptials’ Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

A local beat reporter for the Pittsburgh Steelers once told me that “now that Ben Roethlisberger is married, life will be easier and he’ll win more Super Bowls.” I don’t need to tell you that this guy was wrong because you and I both know that he was. I’m hopeful however that this writer will not make any similar predictions in regards to Kenny Pickett. I say this because Pickett got married this past weekend. First off, congrats to Pickett and his new bride Amy who also had a terrific ice sculpture of a Steelers’ logo at their reception. The writer’s point over a decade ago was that with Big Ben getting married, it would make him a better QB. No more late nights out at bars and fewer opportunities for poor choices. I get it; that makes a lot of sense when you think about it. There are differences however. Pickett is significantly older than Roethlisberger was when their respective careers began. As the old saying goes “with age comes wisdom.” Well, I’m still waiting for the wisdom part in my case but I digress. Personally, I don’t think any of us are going to cite Pickett’s recent nuptials any time he has a great game or a poor game. There is a certain routine that develops and that can help normalize how moments are handled but we are all different. We can’t make any of our players fit into any boxes that they aren’t meant for so my suggestion is simple. Let Kenny be Kenny regardless of his marital status.

Training Camp Previews

It’s hard to believe but our Training Camp Previews will be coming out soon. The Steelers report to Camp on July 27th so we want to have you as prepared as possible with our tales and opinions on each and every position. You may see the first one coming as soon as this week.

Pac Man

It’s funny. Only in Pittsburgh does one hear or read the name “Pac Man” and not think of the video game. Instead, they think of Adam “Pac Man” Jones, the former Cincinnati Bengals’ DB. His behavior both on and off the field helped build a reputation of ugliness during that time. Now retired, Jones has turned things around and with good reason. He has legally taken custody of the late Chris Henry’s kids who are budding superstars in football and basketball. Henry was an athletic wide out who played with Jones at West Virginia and with the Bengals. He died tragically at the age of 26. Jones will forever be an asshole Bengal in my book but I have respect for how he has straightened himself out and helped others in the process.
