SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Numbers Game” Edition

Good Tuesday to you Steelers fans.

OK, OK… my apologies to you diehards who read the column everyday. I have no excuses other than it was one busy and long weekend and that’s why I was absent yesterday… The Pittsburgh Steelers announced the numbers assigned to their rookies and undrafted free agents a few days ago and normally this isn’t a huge deal. This year however is a bit different for a couple of reasons. Here’s the list.

First, Najee Harris will stay with college number of 22 held last year by Steven Nelson. Sixth Round pick Quincy Roche will wear 48 which has had little time to dry so to speak with Bud Dupree moving on to Tennessee. The most surprising thing to me is Kendrick Green getting Maurkice Pouncey’s 53. Not that it should be retired or anything to that extent but I was a little surprised it was re-issued so quickly. As most of you know, the Steelers only have two retired numbers (75 and 70) but they have a plethora of numbers they never issue. 12, 32, 36, 43, 47, 52, 58, 59 and 68. This of course makes it very easy to see why the Steelers use so many “odd” numbers. I’m going to assume that if Kevin Rader gets cut then Pat Freiermuth will switch from 88 to 87, his college number. Why are these things important? I really don’t know but I guarantee you there are millions of kids who buy jerseys who care!

The Podcast

Last Thursday we shared our thoughts on the Steelers’ draft; days two and three. Who did we like? Who we didn’t? Are the Steelers a better team than they were before the Draft? All that and much more on the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc.

Tweet of the Day… Derrick clearly woke up looking to stir the pot this morning!

Tebow

Allow me to explain and I can only speak for myself here. I don’t like people putting words in my mouth so I won’t do it here but I think I understand the hate for this guy. First of all, he was a fun and highly successful college QB. I thoroughly enjoyed watching him. As an NFL QB, he wasn’t good and probably lasted longer in the league than he should have simply because of his reputation and strong character. Personally I can’t stand him because… well… you know…  Denver… Overtime… Ugh. As for his new opportunity as a tight end in Jacksonville, he’s getting this chance simply because of Urban Meyer, his former coach at Florida. I’m sure he’ll give great effort but probably won’t make it. Many assume the dislike of Tebow has to do with his strong religious standing and I’m guessing that’s true for some. I just think on a football level he gets more opportunities than others and that’s probably not fair. But life isn’t fair either so in the grand scheme of things? I really don’t care.
