SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Not So Good’ Edition

Good Friday to you Steelers fans.

As I stated earlier this week, the Senior Bowl has a lot of very talented players but most of the guys projected as first round selections rarely attend. The Quarterbacks currently in attendance in Mobile are leaving a lot to be desired. In other words, their play has not been so good. Malik Cunningham of Louisville and Max Duggan of TCU are the guys getting the most attention and rightfully so. Cunningham is loaded with potential and athleticism while Duggan proved himself as a tremendously tough leader in guiding the Horned Frogs to the National Championship Game. Unfortunately, their play has been erratic and so has the rest of the group of QBs. This has led to suggest that maybe the Pittsburgh Steelers were ‘lucky’ to have gotten Kenny Pickett last year. While that may prove to be true in the long run, there are some really talented QBs (C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young and Will Levis to name a few) that aren’t in attendance this week. Based on what I’ve seen of this QB crop, these are guys who likely be fighting to be backups and in some cases maybe even fighting for a spot on an NFL Practice Squad.

The Podcast

Episode 305 of the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc of South Florida is available for your viewing and/or listening pleasure. I threw some free agent/draft scenarios out at the guys plus we discuss Pat Freiermuth’s comments on the Matt Canada offense and much more.

Tweet of the Day… The bigger problem with this tweet is that Terry Bradshaw, a four-time winner and two-time MVP isn’t on this list. Rosenthal is a moron.

Day 3 Observations from the Senior Bowl

A guy I saw a lot of this past fall was Michigan centerĀ Olesegun Oluwatimi. A transfer after having graduated from Virginia, he went on to win the Rimington Award as the best center in the nation. His biggest asset is his intelligence. He diagnoses things very quickly and makes adjustments to his line like a pro. That said, he’s been dominated at times this week by bigger, more powerful defensive tackles. Oluwatimi is over 300lbs but at 6’2″ he appears on the smaller side and I’m not sure how that works in the NFL. I’m not saying he can’t have a great career, but there are more concerns than I anticipated… Few have been discussed this week as much asĀ Cody Mauch.Ā The flowing red hair and pasty white skin makes him stand out but his play so far has been the real attraction. He played tackle at North Dakota State and will kick down inside, maybe even center in the NFL. He’s been a machine this week literally blocking and stonewalling everyone that comes at him… I mentioned Daiyan Henley already this week – the linebacker from Washington State – and he’s continued to impress. Gratnted, the competition is what it is but he looks like a three-down guy to me. I’d love him in the Black and Gold on day two… Keep an eye on wide receiver Michael Wilson of Stanford. Much of his career centered around injuries but he can make plays and has versatility. Probably a day three guy which is fine.

Trubisky

One thing that was brought up on our podcast last night was whether Mitchell Trubisky wasn’t regretting his decision to come to Pittsburgh. Not because of Kenny Pickett but because Matt Canada’s offense. If he was stifled as much as Pickett was, then that had to have been very difficult for a veteran like himself. I don’t know for certain this was the case but it has to be considered going into 2023.
