SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Next QB Up” Edition

Good Tuesday to you Steelers’ fans.

I suspect we will get our first definitive answer today when Mike Tomlin speaks to the media but knowing who is going to be the quarterback on Sunday night in Los Angeles would be nice. I pose this because I have to believe that Mason Rudolph will not play. Based on everything I’m hearing his concussion is that severe. If that remains the case then I am of the opinion that Devlin Hodges did more than enough to get the start. Paxton Lynch will more than likely be brought up to the active roster and don’t dismiss him playing. Tomlin likes stability and Lynch would give him that as a guy who has started games in the league before. I’ll update this once Tomlin gives us updates on Rudolph during his presser.

The Tomlin Tales

Any time a team starts losing, rumors and tall tales will begin to fly. It’s even worse now in the social media age. Yesterday, CBS’ Jason LaCanfora tweeted that Washington Redskins’ owner Dan Snyder would be willing to do just about anything to bring Mike Tomlin to D.C.. I couldn’t resist the urge to write about just what this potential move would look like.

Tweet of the Day… This sums it up lately doesn’t it?

My Favorite Question

OK so maybe it isn’t my “favorite” question but every time I see it, I chuckle. Those that defend Tomlin often ask “If you get rid of him then who do you get to replace him?” Here’s what I know. When Bill Cowher retired, most fans were certain the job was Russ Grimm’s. This was because he was a former NFL lineman and a proven and respected position coach. But then came this “Tomlin” guy with a relatively limited resume. All these years later, the same holds true. Just because you don’t think there’s a better guy doesn’t matter. There’s always someone available.

Wide Receiver Shuffle

The last two weeks have seen Donte Moncrief not even be available for the Steelers. That’s likely going to change now with James Washington having an AC joint issue in his shoulder. I don’t know the severity just yet but I’m guessing he’s out Sunday. Oddly enough, the Steelers need to cut Moncrief in order to recoup their third round comp pick for Le’Veon Bell. Because the Eagles cut L.J. Fort the comp formula was affected and that took away the Steelers’ third rounder. If they cut Moncrief they can get it back. If the season continues in a downward direction I fully expect Moncrief to be jettisoned.

The Zebras

Really good stuff from Connor here on the horrendous officiating Sunday. He’s included several GIFs as well.

A few thoughts, if Hodges plays well that would indicate to me that our player evaluation is very poor [something i have suspected for some time]. I have said for years it should be best man up as opposed to next man up. As far as the refs go they have been pretty bad across the board, i see no bias. The Steelers really thought they had a pretty good group of WR’s, once again back to my first point. I still feel we have an above average group of players who are very poorly coached, their record backs this up. A few injuries shouldn’t decimate a team every team gets injuries even to their star players. As i said in my last comment we should use this time to really evaluate just what we have from coaches to kickers. I really think a breath of fresh air is in order.
