SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘New Arrival’ Edition

by Steeldad
Heyward of the Steelers. steelcityblitz.com

Good Monday to you Steelers fans.

This tiny little outfit of mine that has been chugging along for more than a decade only adds new members every now and then. We aren’t like some of the big operations who go through people like I go through a buffet so I’m always cautious about adding new members to our tight-knit family. I’ve decided to make an exception however because this new person arrived a bit unexpectedly on Friday night. Ryan Scarpino and his significant other welcomed their first child into the world. Mom is doing well as is Mr. Jonas Scarpino!! Ryan will be absent from the SCB Steelers Podcast for a few weeks while he adjusts to being a father. If you’re on Twitter, give him a congrats shout @scarpizio.

The Beast

I try my best to give out props to those who I feel deserve it. Dane Brugler of The Athletic has published his annual “Beast” Draft Guide today. You’ll need a subscription, but if you are a ‘draftnik’ at all it’s worth the money. It’s 308 pages full of analysis on players that cannot be beaten.

Titt of the Day… You read that correctly. If Elon Musk is going to refer to Twitter now as “Titter” than I’m going to call my rite of passage “Titt” rather than “Tweet.”

Pretty cool to get a shoutout from Cam Heyward himself!

Podcast Plans

With the Draft less than three weeks away, this Thursday we’ll be looking at strictly the offensive side of the ball. The following week, we’ll flip over to the defense and then on Draft night we’ll be airing live throughout the first round of the Draft.

Draft a QB? It’s Possible

Let me be really clear here; I am 100% against drafting a quarterback this year. With limited picks in the middle rounds (none in the fifth or sixth) and with our need for depth, I just don’t have the patience for a QB to be selected. Do I understand why they could pick a QB? Yes, I actually do. With just Kenny Pickett and Mitchell Trubisky on the current roster, the need for a third QB is there. While I would be stunned to see Mason Rudolph come back, I can’t rule it out because he’s still on the free agent market. That said, with five selections in the first 120 picks of this Draft, I see picking a player who will almost certainly never see the field, as a complete waste of a pick. They just entertain Houston QB Clayton Tune who came in on a personal visit. He’s believed to be a late fourth or fifth round guy. I wasn’t happy when they selected Landry Jones in the fourth round and I won’t be thrilled if they do the same here.

Prospect Profiles

We’ve started our NFL Draft Coverage here at SCB and the first of our Position Profiles is out. We’ve made the decision that rather than make extensive profiles of each player, we are doing smaller ones and grouping them by position. This allows us to easier update information as Pro Days and the Combine provide more info.
