SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Nelson Island” Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers’ Fans!

There was once ‘Revis Island.’ There was once ‘Fantasy Island’ and according to my records there is still a ‘Rhode Island.’ I think that term often gets thrown around a little too quickly in regards to football these days and I’ll actually argue against myself doing it here. While free agent acquisition Steven Nelson isn’t quite an ‘island’ he’s coming pretty darn close. On a defense that features bigger names like Minkah Fitzpatrick, T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward, Nelson has been a terrific addition and major bright spot for the Steelers. To this point, Nelson has played 100% of the defensive snaps in eight of the Steelers’ 12 games. In the other three (he missed one game due to injury), he’s played no less than 97% of the snaps. He has yet to pick off a pass and has just a handful of passes defended but that also speaks to the job he’s doing in terms coverage. Nelson has also been a very consistent tackler as well which is a must for any Steelers’ corner. Being fearless in taking on bigger backs and offensive linemen helps too. There were many skeptical of Kevin Colbert’s decision to bring in the former Chief in free agency but to this point Nelson has exceeded all expectations. I see no reason why his outstanding play can’t continue down the stretch.

The Podcast Take 2

Technology really is awesome but sometimes I want to destroy it like Thanos and just snap my fingers. We were all ready to start recording last night when my laptop decided to go through and update everything which was not cool at all. Anyway, look for the show to drop tonight. My apologies.

Tweet of the Day… Let’s hope so man. Don’t start reading the papers! Be yourself!

No Regrets From The Protector

Maurkice Pouncey made a happy return this week to the Steelers after spending the last two weeks away from the team. His two-game suspension for his role in the Myles Garrett assault now over, Pouncey is glad to be back but told reporters he “has no regrets.” From an outside viewpoint I’d say that’s easy to say because the team won both games in his absence but being much closer to the situation than most I can tell Pouncey would feel the exact same way regardless of the team’s fortunes. There are few people as loyal to their team as Pouncey.

From the Injury Report

STEELERS

WR Diontae Johnson (Illness) – LP
WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (Knee) – DNP
LB Mark Barron (NIR) – DNP
RB James Conner (Shoulder) – Limited
TE Vance McDonald (NIR) – DNP

CARDINALS

DL Jonathan Bullard (Hamstring) – DNP
WR Larry Fitzgerald (NIR) – DNP
DL Corey Peters (NIR) – DNP
OL J.R. Sweezy (Illness) – DNP
S Jalen Thompson (Concussion) – Limited
OL Lamont Gaillard (Thumb) – Full

NOTES… Sounds like JuJu’s knee is not responding as well as hoped earlier this week. I would list him as ‘highly doubtful’ right now… Based on Tomlin’s comments Tuesday, I don’t think we’ll see James Conner on Sunday either.

Congrats T.J.!!

This morning the NFL announced that Steelers’ Outside Linebacker T.J. Watt was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Month. There are not enough superlatives to describe his play this season. Well done!

Have a great day Steeler Nation!
