SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The ‘Mistakes Happen’ Edition

Good Thursday to you Steelers fans.

Believe it or not, even the Pittsburgh Steelers can make mistakes. They’ve made poor draft choices. They’ve signed poor free agents. They’ve given big contracts to guys who just didn’t pan out. The bottom line here is that, yeah… mistakes are made. While this isn’t on the level of many other more famous ones, the Steelers righted a wrong of sorts this week in bringing back Quincy Roche. Drafted in 2021, the outside linebacker from Miami, showed promise in Training Camp that year. Ultimately he was cut and eventually picked up by the New York Giants. He would play in 14 games his rookie season (mostly on Special Teams) where he forced a fumble and collected 2.5 sacks. The Steelers brought back Roche on a futures contract which doesn’t really mean much other than he’ll get a shot to show what he has during the Spring and then maybe in Training Camp. I am in no way expecting him to become James Harrison, but this team is in dire need of depth at the outside linebacker position. If Roche can provide that -stop the run and at be a pass rushing threat – then he’ll come cheap and will also help bolster the Special Teams. Of course he could also prove to be ready to get on with his life’s work away from football too so who knows? Here’s hoping he can make some contributions in 2023.

The Podcast – FRIDAY

Just a quick note that we are going to be doing the SCB Steelers Podcast presented by DEK Roofing Inc on FRIDAY night this week. We all have some form of conflict for tonight so we hope you can catch us Friday night. We’ll be live on our YouTube Channel starting at 10:05pm ET.

Tweet of the Day… I asked this question yesterday and I hate to break it to you, but Antonio Brown is likely to get into the Hall of Fame. Maybe not but he was the best WR in football for five years.

Coach of the Year

Mike Tomlin did not make the finalists’ list for NFL Coach of the Year. I admit that I thought he did a very nice job in 2022 getting the team back to above water after starting 2-6. But there are far better candidates for this award. Brian Daboll in New York would be my choice. When you look at what he’s done with Daniel Jones, no-name receivers and a really average roster, getting them into the Divisional playoffs was a huge accomplishment. Tomlin is to be credited with what he did, but it’s not good enough to crack the top five and I’m OK with that.

Very Interesting…

The closer we get to the offseason the more curious I become about Alex Highsmith. It has to be a priority for the Steelers to give him an extension following his best season. But Highsmith also knows that another season like he just had will make him one of the more coveted free agents in 2024. That means how this plays out will be very interesting. Will the Steelers offer enough? Does Highsmith want to stay here in the first place? How much is too much considering how much is already invested on the defense? This is going to be something we watch closely.
