SCB Steelers Quick Hitters: The “Mini-Camp Primer” Edition

Good Monday to you Steelers’ Fans!

The Pittsburgh Steelers will begin their mandatory three-day mini-camp tomorrow. This is the final time the team will be together until Training Camp starts with the time between now and then commonly known as the ‘dead period.’ I’ll have more on that later in the week though. For today, let’s take a look at some of the key things to watch for over the next few days.

I’m going to start with the quarterbacks. Let me set Ben Roethlisberger aside because we know his situation don’t we? What’s curious to me is that there isn’t just a battle between Mason Rudolph and Josh Dobbs for the primary backup, there is also the possibility that UDFA Rookie Devlin Hodges could be pushing (Dobbs we believe) for the third spot. We’ve heard this kind of talk before only for it to not materialize but the word coming from the South Side is that Hodges has performed well and could prove to be more than just another ‘camp arm.’

Devin Bush’s load of work is next. The only knock we’ve heard about Bush so far since joining the Steelers has been that “he isn’t big.” Well, I’m pretty confident the Steelers were aware of this development. Other than that, the reviews have been glowing. T.J. Watt called him “quicker than snot” and that he is. Other players have been impressed with smarts ability to grasp the defense. This will be an intriguing three days in terms of just how much the Steelers put on his plate from the mental side of things.

Tweet of the Day… The only thing better would be to bring back the old Miller Lite commercials.

Nothing will be settled this week in terms of kickers but Chris Boswell has definitely been put on notice. Since it became public knowledge that his roster bonus was pushed back until the end of the preseason (had he not agreed he would have been cut), it has become clear the Steelers aren’t messing around. Rookie UDFA Matthew Wright will not only have to perform well, but he’ll have to be head and shoulders above Boswell to win the job.

The secondary situation (safeties in particular) will be of special interest this week. We’ll go ahead and assume that Terrell Edmunds and Sean Davis will see the lions’ share of the duties but we are very curious as to how they develop as well as the depth behind them. Rookie P.J. Locke is a hammer who could pose some challenges to other depth players.

You’ve heard of Where’s Waldo right? This week it’s “Where’s Sutton?” Rookie EDGE rusher Sutton Smith as seen a lot of time at fullback during Phase Three of OTAs. I’m curious to see if that continues this week.

The Steel City Blitz Steelers Podcast presented by 26shirts.com/Pittsburgh returns this week!
